Cemeteries and Crematoria NSW (CCNSW) is leading the transformation of the regulation of the cemeteries and crematoria sector in NSW. The vision is to ensure that current and future generations have equitable and affordable access to interment services including burial and that interment practices and beliefs of all religious and cultural groups are respected.

As the Chief Executive Officer this is a rare and exciting opportunity to lead an energised and customer focused agency tasked with delivering on an ambitious suite of reforms. CCNSW is charged with implementing a newly commenced licensing scheme a first in Australia building a robust compliance capability to protect customers and communities and developing future policy and regulation to ensure a sustainable and customer focused future for the sector. CCNSW will also play an important role in providing strategic direction and support to the sector and stakeholders as they navigate emerging customer preferences new technologies and opportunities to maximise the value of cemeteries as public spaces in line with community needs and expectations.

About the role
From 1 July 2025 the Chief Executive Officer is an independent statutory officer appointed by the Governor of New South Wales on the recommendation of the Minister for Lands and Property.

With a strong authorising environment and after much recent progress the new Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for taking CCNSW to the next level as a regulator of cemeteries and crematoria across the state. This is an opportunity to lead the agency to become a strong and effective regulator benefiting consumers today and to provide expertise and leadership that drives the NSW Governments ambitious cemetery reform agenda.

In this high-profile role you will establish strategic relationships with stakeholders; provide expert advice to Ministers and across government; navigate challenging issues at the intersection of land use science religion consumer protection and business; and drive the performance of CCNSW.

Following significant recent growth the CEO has a unique opportunity to shape and develop a leadership team and agency culture that drives innovation in interment services.

The provisions governing senior executive bands contracts remuneration employment benefits and allowances under the Government Sector Employment Act 2013 apply to the Chief Executive Officer but the role is otherwise not a Public Service employee.

About You
To be successful in this role you will be a strategic compassionate and influential leader with the emotional intelligence and maturity to navigate a sector rich in cultural spiritual and emotional significance. You bring a sophisticated approach to stakeholder engagement with the ability to build and maintain trusted relationships across diverse groups including faith-based leaders industry operators and government partners.

While experience in regulatory or compliance settings may be beneficial what sets you apart is your ability to apply regulatory frameworks in a balanced flexible and outcomes-focused wayencouraging voluntary compliance and fostering collaboration over enforcement. You understand that regulation in this sector is about stewardship guidance and supporting continuous improvement.

Your ability to operate confidently at the intersection of community values public policy and commercial imperatives will be key. You have a strong track record of leading reform managing complex stakeholder environments and delivering results through influence and strategic insight. A natural leader and coach you are capable of building high-performing teams and cultivating a positive purpose-driven culture. You seek out opportunities to understand and embrace innovation and new ways to address customer and community needs and expectations as they evolve.
