The Position

Reporting to the Director the Senior Program Manager is an integral member of the Emergencies & Humanitarian Assistance team and will have an opportunity to influence and execute the teams strategy to grow program impact as part of our overall organizational strategy:All Girls Standing Strong Creating Global Change.

The Senior Program Manager will lead a small team that is responsible for building a diversified multi-million-dollar portfolio of grants financed by a variety of institutional donors responding to rapid onset emergencies and complex crises implemented through Plan Internationals offices globally. The incumbent will bring proven leadership and program design experience working in a humanitarian context. They will provide strategic support around grant acquisition including prospecting diversification and donor engagement leading on humanitarian project design proposal writing multi-stakeholder coordination and relevant internal and external processes.

People leadership is a core competency required for this role; the individual is accountable for a team and is directly responsible for the management of that team and portfolio including supporting recruitment of new team members and onboarding as necessary. The role includes full accountability for setting and managing performance expectations.

Working collaboratively with Plan International Country Offices and a dedicated team of Program Managers Grants Finance Managers and Technical Advisors a flexible approach to working and a desire to collaborate and learn from colleagues is critical to success.

What success looks like

  • Leading a team of program development professionals ensuring workloads are well balanced roles and responsibilities are clear and a positive team environment is fostered.
  • Providing oversight of a large fast-paced diversified grant pipeline financed by a variety of institutional donors and partners such as Global Affairs Canada the World Food Programme OCHA UNHCR and others.
  • Ensuring high quality gender responsive programs are designed in line with good humanitarian practice and minimum standards reflect PSEA and safeguarding considerations and are in line with Plan Internationals standard policies and procedures.
  • Fostering and maintaining strong relationships with key donors and partners including Plan International Country / Regional / Global colleagues and other stakeholders in Canada and globally.
  • Keeping well informed and actively participating in discussions on issues that relate to humanitarian action including conflicts and other crises and act as a subject matter expert / thought leader internally and externally. This may include representing Plan International Canada in various internal and external networks forums and events.
  • Responding effectively to emergencies including deployments as needed and leading effective communication between Plan International Country Offices National Offices relevant donors as well as marketing philanthropy and communication teams.
  • Contributing to team-building efforts supporting team members in navigating challenges and identifying solutions and ensuring the integration of team members in relevant decision-making processes.

As our ideal candidate you will have:

  • Extensive experience in emergency and humanitarian programs including overseas responding to rapid-onset disasters as well as complex and protracted crises.
  • Demonstrated success in building a large portfolio of institutional grants with the ability to produce a variety of high-quality proposals and relevant materials often at short notice.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian financing mechanisms including requirements of key donors such as GAC-YHD WFP UNHCR and other emergency donors.
  • Understanding of the humanitarian principles key industry standards such as SPHERE the Core Humanitarian Standard and familiarity with thematic areas such as child protection education in emergencies food security nutrition GBV and Gender in emergencies.
  • Adept with applying Results Based Management (RBM) with strong aptitude in budget development negotiation and revision.
  • Exceptional coordination and organizational skills for leading effective planning processes with aptitude to manage multiple proposals and other deliverables simultaneously.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to research analyze synthesize and present information quickly and accurately in line with donor requirements.
  • Agile and able to take a flexible approach to dealing with changes establish priorities in a time-sensitive environment and ensure high quality deliverables in a fast-paced matrixed environment.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills and strong ability to build productive cross-cultural working relationships and environments with colleagues across the organization donors and other partners.
  • Degree in humanitarian affairs international development project cycle management or other relevant discipline is an asset.
  • Ability to undertake deployments and international travel sometimes in difficult contexts or with short notice.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English. Ability to work in French and/or Spanish highly desired.

The salary range for this position is anticipated to be between $73000 and $91000. We comprehensively evaluate a variety of factors to determine fair compensation including experience specific job-related skills and relevant educational or professional training.
