Work Schedule: This is a full-time live-in position. Typical work hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm including some evenings weekends and holidays. (On-Call).


THE DEPARTMENT:

Residence Life Team within University Housing Services (UHS). The Residence Life Team (RLT) is responsible for development and delivery of services and programs in a residential experience that ensures the quality of life well-being and personal development of residential students contributing to retention and academic success. This unit is responsible for establishing policy and procedure in the residential facilities individual contact with residents advising and facilitating student government administering conduct intervening in crisis developing educational and programmatic efforts and coordinating the safety and security of residents.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Team Guidance and Direction:

  • Coordinates and advises Front Desk Assistants (FDA) Resident Advisors (RA) Program Assistants (PA) and Residence Life Interns (RLI) in the daily operations and emergency interventions of residential communities.
  • Meets with direct reports in structured weekly one-on-one meetings; sets work objectives monitors follow-through and resolves complex issues. Facilitates weekly staff meetings and professional in-service training workshops.
  • Assists with the annual search process for professional staff and student leaders; provides process-based hiring recommendations and evaluative input to the Director of Residence Life.
  • Assists with the annual selection processes for Resident Advisors Program Assistants Front Desk Assistants and Residence Life Interns.

Emergency Response and Intervention:

  • Functions as 24-hour crisis and emergency response live-on personnel on a rotating basis; leads and advises student leaders regarding emergency response protocols. Works closely with the University Police Department Title IX Survivor Advocacy Services Counseling & Psychological Services and the Housing Leadership Team to respond to crises assess situations intervene and make referrals as appropriate.
  • Serves as the Principal Building Marshall during emergency operations.
  • Gathers information to support the coordination of medical transports police response natural disasters and facility-related incidents such as floods.
  • Performs wellness checks on residents.
  • Participates in required and ongoing emergency response safety and compliance trainings.

Administrative and Policy Interpretation and Fiscal Responsibilities:

  • Maintains thorough knowledge of and enforces University policy UHS policy and the UHS Housing License Agreement for residential students.
  • Participates in reviewing residential policies and procedures for the annual housing agreement (student lease) and assists in developing and refining departmental programs and initiatives. Assists with the implementation of operational procedures.
  • Aligns administrative practices with established expectations for professional staff student leaders front desk attendants elected hall council members the Resident Student Association (RSA) the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) and the broader residential student population.
  • Facilitates administrative operations of the department including but not limited to move-in room assignments occupancy reporting room changes work orders and check-out procedures.
  • Advises UHS student governance organizations on the use of funds for residential programs events and community supplies ensuring alignment with applicable policies and fiscal guidelines.
  • Plans purchases to support programming development in accordance with departmental procedures and budget requirements.

Program Development and Student Intervention:

  • Leads assessment of academic cross-cultural personal growth and community development programmatic needs of residential students through surveys focus groups and related assessment techniques.
  • Coordinates and monitors implementation of the residential curriculum.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with residents; utilizes effective practices to encourage student success through programs role modeling and crisis interventions with students and staff.
  • Collaborates with departments across campus to support student learning and engagement.
  • Collaborates with campus departments regarding student development retention education that supports cross-cultural engagement health and academic advancement.
  • Provides moderate support for residents in crisis including connecting them to appropriate campus resources.

Leadership Training and Development:

  • In collaboration with the Senior Coordinators of Residential Education and Leadership the Director of Residence Life and other unit personnel develops annual fall and winter training programs development modules and in-service learning opportunities for professional staff and student leaders.
  • Serves as a co-advisor for the Resident Students Association (RSA) and/or the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) supporting leadership development and organizational effectiveness.

Committee Involvement (for both University and Department) and Additional Responsibilities:

  • Chairs or participates in university and departmental committees as assigned.
  • Serves as a liaison with Student Affairs Administrative Affairs University Advancement and Academic Affairs.
  • Supports cooperative university efforts designed to meet the needs of residential students and enhance the residential experience.
  • Assists with additional projects and tasks as needed based on departmental priorities and occupancy demands.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree - Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences public or business administration or a jobrelated field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a yearforyear basis. and
  • Driver License Valid and in State Valid California drivers license and auto insurance.
  • Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A masters degree in a jobrelated field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Working knowledge of the practices procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect compile analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural multisexed and multiaged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty CSU administrators student organizations private and public agencies and others in committee work and student advising and community contacts; and rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three years professional full-time experience in student housing residence life or a Student Service program is preferred.
  • Masters Degree preferred.
  • Experience in working in a living and learning environment with increased responsibilities in coordinating daily operations of a residence hall and leading a residence life staff. Individuals who have demonstrated interest in building a community which fosters appreciation of inclusion and belonging as are individuals who add vitality innovation perspective and creativity to the program.
  • Experience responding to emergencies and serve in an on-call capacity high level crisis management procedures and follow-up protocols. General knowledge of the personal and social problems typically encountered by college students preferred. Working knowledge of group dynamics and needs preferred.
  • Ability to relate to the present-day population of college students preferred.
  • Skills in developing and implementing an integrated multicultural perspective in education cultural and social programs and activities preferred.
  • Working knowledge of practices procedures and activities of a University Housing department preferred.
  • Ability to advise a diverse student population individually and in groups preferred.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position preferred.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the APC bargaining unit 4. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on theCSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on theCSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $5083 and maximum $7228 per month.
