About the Role

Join our maternity team at Health New Zealand I Te Whatu Ora Southern at a key time of change where you will meaningfully contribute to our kaupapa of providing a safe and positive childbearing experience to all expectant pregnant people in our region.

As the Midwife Manager you will lead and support the Maternity Unit in Invercargill providing clinical and operational leadership to ensure the service is responsive to the changing needs of our community and health system.

Some key deliverables include but are not limited to:

  • Provide professional and clinical leadership for the Southland Maternity Unit to ensure safe and effective delivery of maternity care identification and mitigation of clinical risk and continuous quality improvement
  • Provide operational leadership to ensure the midwifery unit operates effectively safely and sustainably on a day-to-day basis
  • Ensure the service is appropriately staffed best practice human resource standards are met and staff are supported and managed to maintain a cohesive and productive team
  • Ensure Maternity Unit operates within budgets for the financial year and work in collaboration with the District Midwife Manager to develop risk mitigation strategies for unexpected expenditures; participate in developing and managing annual and three-year capital expenditure plans
  • Manage unit quality and risk programmes; lead and manage certification and accreditation within Maternity Unit

Here at Southland Hospital we operate an 18-bed integrated unit handling approximately 1200 births a year as part of a full range of primary and secondary maternity services. As the only secondary birthing unit in Southland we offer inpatient and outpatient antenatal delivery and postnatal services and a Lactation Consultancy Service. Our brand of care and compassion involves a very special blend of strength compassion and cool headedness from our midwives who welcome our babies into the world.


Southern Midwifery support a very diverse maternity community spread across the region providing care to whānau in urban rural and remote areas of Southern region. To achieve our maternity and broader population goals we work in partnership with Iwi primary care and community providers rural trust hospitals and education and research partners across the district.

Salary range

This role falls under the terms and conditions of the MERAS Midwives Collective Agreement (1 February 2024 30 April 2025) and falls between the step 1 ($132397p.a prorata) and Step 3 ($142182 p.a prorata) of the Designated Senior Midwife Salary Scale - Grade 7.

About you

Alongside your strong leadership skills our ideal candidate will also bring extensive midwifery experience and be an excellent communicator.

Some of the skills we are looking for are:

  • It is essential that you are a NZ Registered Midwife and hold a current annual practicing certificate.
  • Possess the ability to think outside the square communicate effectively and promote best practice and standards of midwifery care
  • Demonstrate sound professional judgement
  • Have relevant knowledge of patient safety and resource management including budgeting equipment and staff management
  • Demonstrate clinical quality safety and best practice.
  • Confidence to build successful working relationships with those around you the ability to work independently or within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Confidence with te ao Māori tikanga and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
  • Hold a relevant post-graduate qualification
