SUMMARY: The Assistant Track Coach provides leadership and direction to the assigned sports team as coordinated with the teams head coach. The assistant coach shall enforce all rules of the WIAA as they relate to the respective sport and will assist with the organization and administration of the assigned athletic team.
ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200 tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Implements and enforces all decision and directives of the head coach
- Assists the head coach with planning and conducting all practice sessions
- Maintains a current and accurate squad roster at all times being sure that it is on file with the head coach
- Supports the head coach in conducting the athletic program of the assigned sport and the total athletic program of the Chief Leschi School system; contributes to and supports team strategies
- Demonstrates loyalty to the head coach and the team
- Attends team staff meetings as directed by the head coach Athletic Director or building principal
- Assume any duties assigned by the head coach pertaining to the respective sport. This includes but is not limited to conducting portions of practice drills handling equipment determining eligibility working with student managers scouting maintaining positive public relations and keeping statistics
- In the absence of the head coach assumes all responsibilities designated as those of the head coach
- Reports any injuries to the head coach and/or Athletic Director
- Assists with the inspection of all equipment oversees the issuance and collection of equipment and maintains equipment inventory records; advises the head coach of any equipment that needs repair or certification. All equipment is the responsibility of the coach.
- Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
At least 19 years old
Possess a high school diploma or GED
Hold a valid and current First Aid Certification card or be enrolled in a Red Cross First Aid Card training course.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associates degree earned from an accredited college with major coursework in Physical Education or coaching or related field OR
Three or more years of direct work experience as a coach of a major team sport (Alternative combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by Human Resources for comparability.)
Demonstrated knowledge of WIAA interscholastic activities policies and WIAA Coaching Standards
Experience in coaching a diverse student population
Current employee of Chief Leschi Schools preferably a certificated employee
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Successful criminal background clearance
Successful and/or clear drug screening
KNOWLEDGE OF:
School board policies and procedures
Human relations/conflict resolution techniques
Principles procedures and practices of the respective team sport
ABILITY TO:
Take initiative and work independently
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Be a role model and serve as an advisor to the students on the squad by providing direction and advice
Maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups in a multicultural and diverse community including school and central office administrators parents and community members
Understand WIAA interscholastic activities policies and WIAA coaching Standards
Demonstrate understanding of and experience with cultural competence
Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time. The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms and is regularly required to talk or hear; stand and/or walk; bend stoop twist squat and kneel; and use hands to finger handle feel and perform fine motor manipulations. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.
