The Washington State Attorney Generals Offices Christine O. Gregoire Spokane Divisionhas an opening for an attorney in a full time position.
This position is based in Spokane Washington. Spokane is a vibrant and beautiful city that enjoys four distinct seasons and provides residents and visitors with world class outdoor adventures including: fishing and whitewater rafting in the Spokane River; biking the Centennial Trail; snow skiing at nearby Mt. Spokane Lookout Pass Silver Mountain 49 Degrees North or Schweitzer Mountain; and hiking boating or fishing in a host of nearby lakes and nature preserves. Spokane also offers great indoor activities: theater including Broadway shows; live music; multiple exhibits; and the opportunity to taste Washingtons renowned grapes and hops at a number of local wineries and craft breweries.
Duties
The selected attorney will provide client advice litigation support and representation tothe Department of Licensing by defending challenges to driver license laws or agency decisions suspending or revoking driver licenses for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs or for violation of other driver license laws. Review for legal sufficiency charging documents and investigative records in designated regulatory programs (SOC Review Pool) as needed. Litigate cases before the Office of Administrative Hearings as well as at superior and appellate courts. This position also represents the Employment Security Department by defending challenges to agency orders granting or denying unemployment benefits or Paid Family and Medical Leave benefits. Finally this position provides legal advice and representation to Eastern Washington University on student conduct and related matters. This includes representing EWU in a variety of forums including administrative tribunals or in state or federal trial courts.
Qualifications
In addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney Generalthe position requires highly developed and mature interpersonal skills including superior communication and listening skills; the ability to work well with some challenging personalities; strong analytical research and writing skills; the ability to meet tight deadlines; the ability to multitask; and the willingness and ability to handle sporadic litigation on short notice. Applicants should have enough litigation background to be comfortable handling any non-tort litigation needs of the clients. Experience providing client advice is a plus but is not required. Applicants must have the ability to work independently; to be collegial and professional; to maintain a good sense of humor; and to collaborate within a team environment with colleagues including colleagues who work in AGO offices outside of Spokane.
Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBAs Rule 6 Law Clerk Program; and be licensed to practice law in Washington state.
