Job Summary

Position Summary

The detention officer provides operational maintenance and security services to the detention facility within the City of Brooklyn Park Police Department. The detention facility operates 24 hours per day 365 days per year.

The detention officer works a rotating schedule of 12-hour shifts that will include overnights weekends and holidays. Once training is completed this detention officer will work a rotating schedule of four days on four days off.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Book and release arrested persons for Brooklyn Park and other agencies.
    • Book search photograph fingerprint identify and supervise arrested persons
    • Assist with determining bail and release conditions for prisoners
  • Maintain detention center paperwork and records to include booking records court system records and daily activity logs.
  • Maintain jail facility to include:
    • Security of jail property and facility
    • Access and egress control
    • Clean areas of detention center
    • Inventory of jail/prisoner supplies
    • Inspections
  • Maintain care and custody of prisoners to include:
    • Monitor prisoner activities and maintain disciplinary records as needed
    • Feed shower and otherwise ensure personal hygiene and well-being
    • Maintain and administer prisoner medication
    • Provide prisoner recreation
    • Supervise prisoner phone calls and visits
  • Provide assistance in special circumstances/ emergency situations to include:
    • Physically restrain and discipline prisoners as directed
    • Provide emergency first aid and medical assistance to prisoners and staff as needed

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • US citizen or lawful resident with INS approval to work in the United States
  • The followingfelony and gross misdemeanor convictions (including pardons and expungements) WILL result in the rejection of a Detention Officer application:
    • Controlled substance conviction
    • Criminal sexual misconduct conviction
    • Bias or benefit of a gang related crime
    • Conviction of assaulting fleeing or eluding a police officer firefighter paramedic etc. under 609.50 resulting in a gross misdemeanor conviction in the last 60 months or a misdemeanor conviction in the last 36 months
    • Evidence that the applicant has misrepresented or falsified any information to any law enforcement agency
  • Valid unrestricted drivers license
  • Knowledge of or familiarity/experience with all relevant policies procedures and general orders pertaining to the operation of the jail
  • Ability to successfully complete and pass physical and psychological examinations and drug test
  • Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation
  • Ability to work a schedule that includes day evening weekend andholiday hours and shifts
  • Ability to maintain security and safety of facility staff and prisoners
  • Ability to frequently deal with angry and disturbed people
  • Ability to appropriately and calmly respond to disorderly and emergency situations
  • Ability to maintain orderly conduct enforce rules and regulations
  • Ability to restrain disorderly prisoners and use appropriate self-defense tactics
  • Ability to make independent judgments and appropriate decisions to resolve issues/problems
  • Ability to complete several tasks at once such as using the photo imaging system completing booking paperwork and monitoring a prisoner
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a multitude of duties that must be completed every day
  • Ability to be detail-oriented to ensure that paperwork and reports are properly completed
  • Ability to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity patience and understanding in the course of work duties
  • Ability to relate to and work with individuals representing a variety of diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets or exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction
Desired Qualifications
  • Associates degree or higher
  • Additional education/training in working with angry disturbed emotionally or mentally ill people
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word SharePoint and Excel
  • Knowledge of or familiarity/experiencewith complicated criminal and civil laws including rules of criminal procedure arrest and detention procedures and data privacy
  • Previous experience with the Department of Corrections county or municipal detention facility
  • Previous law enforcement/criminal justice experience
  • Previous experience with Printrak or similar fingerprint software
  • Previous experience with Picture Link or similar software
  • Previous experience using MNCIS Portals HenRap (Adult and Juvenile) MRAP (Adult and Juvenile) MyBCA statewide systems MGA Odyssey and TriTech
  • Professional paid volunteer or internship work experience in a related area
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations
  • Fluency in Spanish Hmong Russian Somali Vietnamese or Laotian
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Additional Requirements
Applicants must successfully pass all selection process events to include a comprehensive and thorough background investigation a psychological exam a medical exam and a drug test.

Additional Information


Anticipated Work Schedule:Position is a full-time non-exempt union position that will work a 12-hour shift on a rotating schedule of four (4) days on and four (4) days off.
Anticipated Hiring Wage:$34.93-$44.89 per hour depending on qualifications with full-time employee benefit package. This pay range is based on the 2025 contract. Once the 2026 contract is finalized the pay rate will be adjusted.
