Job Description

The Project

ACCIONA has been selected to deliver Western Harbour Tunnel Stage 2 Sydneys third harbour crossing. The new Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) will connect to WestConnex at the Rozelle Interchange cross underneath Sydney Harbour between Birchgrove and Waverton and connect with the Warringah Freeway near North Sydney.

Project scope includes:

  • Construction of approximately 4.8 kilometres of mainline tunnels with three lanes in each direction
  • Civil Mechanical and Electrical fitout of Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunnels
  • Surface level work including on and off ramps and tie-in work to the Warringah Freeway

ACCIONA are looking for a full-time Slurry Treatment Plant (STP) Mud Engineer to join our Operational this role you will be responsible for organizing and coordinating the operation of a French-manufactured next-generation slurry treatment plant (STP) for a major tunnel project in Sydney ensuring adherence to the highest engineering standards.

Key accountabilities for the position:

  • Oversee the operation and management of the STP including monitoring and adjustment of bentonite polymer and specialty additives to maintain optimal slurry properties.
  • Conduct routine laboratory testing of TBM spoil and ground supporting slurry rheological properties to ensure consistent compliance with TBM demands and MS (Matériel de Sablière) STP operational parameters.
  • Coordinate with the Lead Operator to maintain stable recirculation flow and slurry quality through the MS separation plant.
  • Ensure slurry and residual mud properties meet requirements for optimal filter press performance.
  • Manage daily activities in collaboration with engineers supervisors subcontractors suppliers designers support staff and client representatives while maintaining detailed logs of slurry tests and additive consumption and monitoring daily costs and production.
  • Prepare budgets accruals and forecasts to meet company objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable legislative requirements safety codes plant regulations underground tunnelling standards and relevant Australian standards.
  • Conduct risk assessments identify hazards and enforce safety protocols to mitigate hazards related to project operations.

Required Skills and Competencies

Capability & Experience you will need to have:

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering or a related field.
  • Fluent in English and French for liaising with Slurry Treatment Plant Manager and French suppliers. International experience will be highly regarded.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience working on tunnelling projects involving Slurry TBMs and Slurry Treatment Plant with filter-presses technologies.
  • Experienced with the design and assembly of Slurry Treatment Plants slurry circuit and conveyor systems for spoil disposal.
  • Knowledge of slurry treatment for large-diameter slurry TBMs (12m) including triple-stage separation and automated filter press systems.
  • Ability to correlate lab results with equipment performance and produce reports.
  • Demonstrated capacity to undertake logistical cycle studies for cranes Multi Service Vehicles TBM operations to optimise tunnelling equipment procurement and subcontract supply contracts for raw and precast materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare budgets and understand financial performance.
  • Well-developed communication skills and an ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of subcontractors local authorities and internal staff.
