What you can expect:

Preferred by Nature is looking for a Sustainable Agriculture Project Specialist to support the Rokan Hulu Landscape and Livelihoods Initiative in Indonesia. You will help drive the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices among oil palm smallholders strengthen farmer organisations and contribute to sustainable production that benefits people nature and the climate. Working closely with communities partners and corporate stakeholders you will deliver training coordinate field activities and stakeholder consultation or forums monitor progress and build a more inclusive and resilient smallholder landscape.


Working with us is never routine so in your first year you can expect the following areas to be central to your work.

  • Delivering lead-farmer and community-based training on regenerative agriculture.
  • Supporting farmer organisations and strengthening inclusion of women and youth.
  • Conducting field monitoring farmer follow-up and documenting adoption progress.
  • Coordinating multi-stakeholder engagement at community and jurisdictional levels.
  • Supporting development of environmental services investment materials and income-generating activities.
  • Contributing to learning processes and continuous improvement of regenerative agriculture approaches.
  • Maintaining relationships with corporate partners civil society and local government.
  • Supporting ground-level project management reporting and field coordination.

Your first year with us:

Within three months you will:

  • Complete onboarding and build strong understanding of Preferred by Nature and the Rokan Hulu project.
  • Study and collaborate with other organisations in the project of the Regenerative Agriculture Framework and Training Approach including gender and youth inclusion.
  • Conduct initial field visits and build rapport with targeted smallholder groups and partners.

Within six months you will:

  • Deliver lead-farmer training and support community training sessions with growing autonomy.
  • Facilitate engagement of womens and youth groups across the project.
  • Conduct regular farmer follow-up and support early adoption of regenerative practices and assist in organising multi-stakeholder workshops and developing environmental services materials.

Within twelve months you will:

  • Lead full-cycle regenerative agriculture training and adoption support.
  • Conduct monitoring of training effectiveness and adoption progress and provide field-based analysis.
  • Organise learning events and contribute to continuous improvement of the project model and lead coordination of multi-stakeholder activities at the jurisdictional level.

Important that you:

  • Hold a bachelors degree in agriculture natural resource management rural development or a related field.
  • Have at least 8 years of experience in sustainable agriculture including hands-on work in palm oil cultivation and smallholder support.
  • Have practical experience with RSPO and ISPO certification systems.
  • Bring experience in community development especially with women and youth.
  • Have at least 4 years of experience leading or conducting monitoring evaluation and learning activities.
  • Possess strong facilitation skills and experience with multi-stakeholder engagement.
  • Speak English and Bahasa Indonesia fluently.
  • Are willing to relocate to or frequently travel within Rokan Hulu.
  • Bring strong project coordination skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Culturally sensitive as you will work with a lot of stakeholders and personnel coming from different ethnicity believes and education level.

Would also be great but not necessary if you:

  • Have experience supporting smallholder business development or income-generating activities.
  • Have experience designing monitoring and learning frameworks.
  • Have experience supporting local government engagement.
