Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) is a model 4 voluntary academic teaching hospital partnered with Trinity College and situated in south west Dublin. With a staff of over 4000 people from 63 differentcountries it provides both acute and tertiary care to an increasing population of circa 800000 people and is a provider of local regional and national specialties. It is also a National Urology Centre the second largest provider of dialysis services in the country Pelvic and Acetabulum National Centre and a designated Trauma Unit.


The Hospital is part of the newly established HSE Dublin & Midlands Region which serves a population of over 1.2 million across seven counties and operates under the governance of an independent Board of Directors who give their time on a voluntary basis. TUH is also supported by the Adelaide Health Foundation the Meath Foundation and Tallaght University Hospital Foundation.

purpose of the role:
The Clinical Engineer will work as part of an expanded Medical Equipment Library team to deliver enhanced technical support to clinical services in TUH. They will assist with the support of medical nursing paramedical and health and social care professionals (HSCPs) in the application of medical device technology.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The person chosen will:
Maintain throughout the Hospital awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all Hospital activities.
Actively participate in continuing education and research activities.
Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the Values of the Hospital.
Work with the Principal Clinical Engineer (Medical Equipment Library) and the Clinical Engineering Team Lead
Be accountable to the Head of Clinical Engineering Services

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITY
Service
The chosen candidate will: -
  • Provide technical and clinical support for a range of medical device technology which is managed by the Clinical Engineering Department.
  • Provide specialist technical support to respiratory medical device technology through the Medical Equipment Library.
  • Assist in the preventative maintenance of the medical device technology in the Medical Equipment Library and main workshop.
  • Assist with the implementation of the procedures that ensure the day to day scientific and technical quality of medical devices under the remit of Clinical Engineering.
  • Participate in research development and innovation as appropriate.
  • Respond to equipment faults and breakdowns as they occur ensuring that equipment is safe and functioning according to manufacturers recommendations before returning to clinical use.
  • Act on notices received from HPRA regarding medical devices.
  • Ensure that any medical devices considered for procurement conform to EU medical device regulation and are CE marked for the intended use.
  • Analyze computer and equipment generated data and present it in a form suitable for clinical interpretation.
  • Assist with advising on the selection specification acceptance testing and safety of new equipment and installations.
  • Assist with supervision of other staff as required.
  • Provide in-house training as required and develop relevant skills as trainer/educator.
  • Undertake courses education and training programmes to the level required for professional development and performance of duties.
  • Develop as required by Head of Clinical engineering Services / Line Manager specialist areas of interest within the fields of Clinical Engineering.
  • Assist with efficient management of the hospitals budget in relevant areas of responsibility.
  • Participate in academic activities as per the hospitals teaching agreements with Trinity College Dublin and with academic institutions and in other academic activities as required and directed by the Head of Department.
  • Participate as required in the Departments out of normal working hours On Call system.
  • All activities shall be carried out in a professional manner at least in accordance with the Engineers Ireland Code of Ethics.



Qualifications & Experience required
Must have:
  • (a) hold a first or second class Honors Degree in which Physics was taken as a major subject and Honors obtained in that subject;
Or
  • hold a recognized qualification at least equivalent thereto.

and
  • b)Possess the requisite knowledge and ability for proper discharge of the duties of the post.
  • In addition to the minimum qualifications outlined above it is desirable that the successful candidate have Clinical Engineering experience in some of the following areas:
Intensive Care Theatre Coronary Care Dialysis Ventilation Diagnostic Ultrasound.

Reward & Recognition
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the Department of Health Consolidated Salary Scales grade code 3794.
  • The appointment is whole-time permanent and pensionable.
  • The annual leave entitlement is 28 working days per year. The leave year runs from 1st April to the 31st of March each year.
  • Normal working hours are 37 worked over 5 days. Your contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8 am to 8 pm over 7 days to meet the requirements for extended day services in accordance with the terms of the Framework Agreement.
