Job Summary

The Home Care Support Worker provides culturally safe practical support that helps Aboriginal Elders and people living with disability live independently safely and confidently at home and in the community. The role has two scopes: SCHADS Level 2 (non-personal care domestic assistance meals social support and community participation) and SCHADS Level 3 (personal care for qualified competent workers authorised to provide basic personal care). All workers follow support plans and must escalate any concerns to the Care Partner Lead or Clinical Nurse Lead.

Role classification

Multiple positions available SCHADS Level 2 or SCHADS Level 3 (based on qualifications competency and assigned duties). Full-time part-time and casual options available.

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 190 staff GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health Social Services Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social emotional and spiritual wellbeing with culture at the heart of everything we do.

Position Purpose

The Home Care Support Worker provides culturally safe practical support that enables Aboriginal Elders and people living with disability to live independently safely and confidently at home and in the community.

This PD includes two scopes:

SCHADS Level 2 Non-Personal Care Stream

For workers who:

do NOT provide personal care

provide domestic assistance meal support and social support

support Elders in programs outings and community participation

SCHADS Level 3 Personal Care Stream

For workers who:

have the required qualification (Cert III Individual Support or equivalent)

have been assessed as competent

are authorised by the Care Partner Lead / Clinical Nurse Lead to deliver basic personal care tasks.

All workers must escalate concerns to the Care Partner Lead and Clinical Nurse Lead.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Experience providing person-centred support to older people or people with disability.
  • Understanding of and ability to work in accordance with the Aged Care Quality Standards relevant to a support worker role (Standards 1 3 4 5 and 6).
  • Ability to recognise and report elder abuse neglect family violence or exploitation.
  • Ability to recognise deterioration or changes in health and escalate promptly.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices including manual handling infection control and hazard reporting.
  • Ability to work respectfully with diverse people and provide culturally safe support for Aboriginal clients.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to document accurately.
  • Ability to work independently with professional boundaries.
  • Physical capacity to perform the inherent requirements (manual handling mobility support standing/walking).
  • Basic computer and documentation skills.

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

  • For Level 2: No formal qualification required but must have experience supporting older people or community preferred DESIRABLE
  • For Level 3: Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing/Disability) or the ability to complete the qualification within an agreed timeframe. ESSENTIAL
  • Ability and willingness to maintain current First Aid and CPR certification to ensure safe response to incidents medical changes falls or emergencies in client homes. ESSENTIAL
  • Demonstrated ability to safely assist clients with medication in line with HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medication or the ability to obtain this competency within an agreed timeframe.
  • DESIRABLE
  • Ability to meet occupational vaccination requirements for workers supporting vulnerable people including providing evidence of immunisation history and recommended vaccinations. ESSENTIAL
  • Valid Drivers Licence: A current and unrestricted Victorian Drivers Licence is essential as the role involves regular travel across the Gippsland and East Gippsland region to engage with community staff service sites and external stakeholders. ESSENTIAL
  • A current and acceptable driving history record from VicRoads (or equivalent) demonstrating a safe driving record suitable for transporting clients and operating GEGAC vehicles.
  • ESSENTIAL
  • A satisfactory Victorian Working with Childrens Check and a satisfactory National Police Check (Aged Care / Vulnerable Persons Sector) and NDIS Worker Screening Clearance ESSENTIAL
  • Ability to meet occupational vaccination requirements for workers supporting vulnerable people including providing evidence of immunisation history and recommended vaccinations and proof of COVID-19 vaccination to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
  • A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
