About the role:

The staff specialist role is an essential member of the Alcohol and Drug Service multidisciplinary team providing clinical leadership and promoting patient safety and quality. The position provides specialist care to inpatients and outpatients under the care of the alcohol and drug service as well as consultation care to patients under other addition the position may provide Addiction Medicine specialist care via telehealth clinics to nominated rural LHDs within NSW.

The position is integral to the effective delivery of the Services teaching and supervision of junior medical officers and medical students and clinical governance processes. The staff specialist will provide clinical leadership and expertise across a range of substance use disorders in inpatient and outpatient settings and via video teleconferencing including assessment pharmacotherapy withdrawal post-withdrawal care and referral and liaison with key treatment providers (including GPs).

The staff specialist will also provide state-wide Addiction Medicine expertise through participation in the Drug and Alcohol Specialist Advisory Service (DASAS) roster.

Selection Criteria:

  • Possess or be eligible to possess registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA);
  • Possess Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine Royal Australasian College of Physicians or other relevant Australasian Specialist College;
  • Demonstrated knowledge skills and high standards of clinical practice in Addiction Medicine commensurate to experience which is appropriate to the requirements of the position;
  • If current Fellowship is with another relevant Specialist College a commitment to gaining the Fellowship of the Chapter of Addiction Medicine while working with the St Vincents Alcohol and Drug Services
  • Demonstrated leadership skills that support and foster innovation to create a learning culture with proven ability to improve the quality of services and patient care outcomes;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience;
  • Demonstrated ongoing contribution to the development dissemination and translation of new knowledge and practices commensurate with work in an academic teaching hospital environment;
  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.
