Systems Engineer (at the rank of IT Technician) in the Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre(Ref.: 533731)
The Role
The appointee will join a small collaborative IT team to ensure our mission-critical services and platforms remain reliable secure and compliant with university policies. Key responsibilities include:
- Administer and harden Linux servers supporting core websites ensuring high availability and smooth operations.
- Manage virtual machines and plan/execute operating system upgrades and migrations with minimal or zero downtime.
- Maintain Windows server and Active Directory.
- Implement and continuously improve IT security measures and conduct information security assessments; implement service monitoring and protections against cyber threats and DoS attacks.
- Contribute to technical support for seminars workshops and events.
- Provide PC helpdesk support and administration.
- Assist with facilities maintenance of AV equipment.
- Occasional Saturday and evening duties will be required.
Qualifications and Qualities
Applicants should have the following qualifications skills and attributes:
- Bachelors degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related discipline.
- At least 2 years work experience in infrastructure server administration and cybersecurity management.
- Strong hands-on experience with Linux server administration and virtual machines management.
- Proficiency in Windows server administration and Active Directory.
- Experience with monitoring platforms preferably Zabbix or Nagios and proactive service monitoring practices.
- Solid understanding of information security best practices including vulnerability assessment and remediation SSL/TLS management firewall rules/policies anti-virus server/client management backups patching and performance tuning.
- Familiarity with policies on information security and data management and personal data protection practices.
- Skilled in scripting languages (Bash Python Perl) for automation and problem-solving.
- Experience with Moodle systems and online registration systems is an advantage.
- Excellent communication skills professional attitude reliability and collaborative teamwork.
- Flexible able to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
- A good security mindset and awareness of relevant compliance and privacy requirements are expected.
What We Offer
The appointment will be made on fixed-term full-time contract for 2 years to commence as soon as possible with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 10% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and medical benefits.
