General Purpose
NOTE: This is a limited-service position and is contingent upon available the event funding is not available the position may be eliminated prior to its scheduled termination date.
The NBS Coordinator works in collaboration with City departments and community partners to create and steward ecologically resilient landscapes across City open spaces and school campuses. The NBS Coordinator also works to create engaging hands-on educational opportunities for students and community members to learn about ecological restoration climate resiliency natural communities and other NBS topics. This work is achieved by building and maintaining coalitions with community partners such as the Burlington School District as well as planning and implementing restoration projects utilizing native plant species. Additionally the Coordinator is responsible for facilitating student-led projects and activities to assist in the goals of planting stewarding and monitoring NBS project sites.

Essential Job Functions
Program Development & Implementation
- Coordinate with BPRW BSD Burlington Wildways and other community partners to create student-driven site-specific habitat-rich and climate resilient school campuses.
- Plan organize and facilitate educational lessons focused on NBS topics such as native habitat restoration plant-animal interactions land stewardship climate science biodiversity etc.
- Collaborate with BSD teachers and administrators to align NBS school programming with the BSD Strategic Plan and educational standards.
- Work to expand NBS programming and projects to new schools within BSD
- Enable students to explore observe and learn about natural areas on and surrounding their school campus
- Coordinate with BPRW & the City Land Steward to identify NBS opportunities across the Citys open spaces; assist in developing implementing and managing NBS sites.
- Participate in outreach to BPRW staff and staff in other Burlington City Departments about NBS programming and project sites as it relates to landscape management and habitat restoration practices
- Maintain familiarity with and relate work back to the Nature-Based Climate Addendum to Burlingtons Open Space Plan and existing management plan documents.
- Work with the Land Steward to coordinate and implement the Conservation Program annual work plan.
- Attend department commission stakeholder City Council and public meetings as required.
- Assist in developing processing and maintaining relevant documents: maps inventories memos reports letters minutes agendas and other; assemble materials and coordinate office functions to meet deadlines and maintain organized filing systems both digital and paper.
- Support the development of grant applications for project funding and assist in managing resources and reporting requirements when funded.
- Coordinate service learning and other volunteer-based NBS projects for City Parks Burlington Wildways partners UVM and other stakeholders around the City.
Property Development & Coordination
- Work with the City Land Steward and necessary stakeholders to implement NBS improvements on City and BSD property that increase plant and animal biodiversity improves stormwater absorption sequesters carbon increases City tree canopy reduces invasive species and provides other ecological resilience to the City landscape.
- Maintain care for and monitor new plantings
- Create and coordinate student-driven native seed and plant nurseries and provide opportunities for education.
- Document collect data and maintain inventory of the impact of restoration efforts in collaboration with Conservation Department and Burlington Wildways partners such as but not limited to invasive species assessment mapping; plant-pollinator interactions and wildlife monitoring
- Perform maintenance such as mowing trimming landscaping debrushing and other vegetative management
- Operate and maintain mechanical equipment including chain saw chipper lawn mowers weed wackers leaf blowers etc.
- Develop and maintain an operational plan and support the management of project site schedules obtain price quotes and proposals monitor contracts priorities review/comment on the outlay of actions related to nature-based solutions.
- Operate and maintain facility related power equipment including table and skill saw routes etc.
- Operate and maintain pick-up trucks and landscape trailers to haul equipment to and from job sites.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements
- Ability to actively support City diversity equity and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing training and professional development.
- Bachelors degree in Environmental Education Environmental Science Botany Biology or related field with three years of relatable experience. Additional experience may be substituted for a degree requirement on a two-for-one per year basis.
- Experience in and love for working with and teaching school aged children. Deep knowledge of local flora and fauna.
- Experience in growing native plants.
- Highly developed organizational skills required to support the coordination of simultaneous event execution. Ability to support the recruitment and coordination of volunteers.
- Ability to work independently within approved workplans.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of budgetary procedures preferred.
- Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public. Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work some evenings weekends and holidays.
- Ability to coordinate the planning scheduling implementation promoting and staging of special events concerts and festivals.
- Ability to support the planning coordination and development of landscape and natural areas.
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Outlook Word and Excel; Ability to prepare reports recommendations and communicate effectively.
- Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships and clearly communicate with City staff program partners stakeholders event producers and the general public.
- Ability to respond to requests for information complaints and suggestions from the public staff administration elected officials and special interest groups in a professional manner.
- Ability to work evenings nights and weekends during snow ice flood or other weather related emergencies or when conditions require.
- Ability to learn and understand applicable federal state and local rules regulations and laws related to maintenance on public lands.
- Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
- Ability to complete multiple projects and meet deadlines required.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time bending and stooping frequently. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to understand and comply with City standards safety rules and personnel policies.
- A valid State drivers license required.
