Location: University of Maryland Extension Howard County 8930 Stanford Blvd. Suite 25 Columbia MD 21045
PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the 4-H youth development educator the program assistant-Outreach performs a variety of duties to carry out teaching demonstrations and other educational activities. Work requires thorough knowledge of the organization and programs where assigned and involves moderate participation in the work of the supervisor.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Outreach Programs: Develop and implement outreach programming with community organizations to promote 4-H youth development activities to non-traditional audiences and develop promotional materials needed to promote and market 4-H Youth Development Program. Assist supervisor with program preparation such as contacting collaborators scheduling outreach programming gathering and assembling program/outreach materials. Teach and evaluate outreach programming.
- General 4-H Programming: Assist 4-H Educator in planning preparing for and conducting county 4-H workshops volunteer trainings STEM programming club meetings and events.
- Howard County 4-H Clover Fun Days: With assistance from supervisor take lead role in planning and implementation of 4-H Clover Fun Days including physical set up and tear down of facilities.
- Howard County Camp and Fair: Assist supervisor with various tasks associated with recruitment orientation and preparation for the Howard County Camp and Fair. Additionally assist supervisor with various tasks during the Howard County Camp and Fair including assisting with entries shows and general 4-H program outreach efforts throughout fair week. Take lead role in developing and implementing 4-H Outreach Day at the Fair.
- Answer phones data entry filing and storage mailings and other duties as assigned by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred
- Bachelor of Science degree.
- Proficient in the use of technology including Microsoft Office products Google Suite internet email and office equipment such as copier printers poster laminator and LCD projector.
- Requires occasional night and weekend hours
- Needs a drivers license and vehicle.
- Team Player who can work independently
- Excellent listening and communication (both written and oral) skills
- Ability to interact effectively with internal and external parties in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Familiarity with the 4-H program projects and basic youth development practices.
- This position is subject to a Criminal History Record Check and University of Maryland Background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion and clearance of the Criminal History Record Check.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
- Nature of the Position: The position frequently presents information through vocal and written communication to individuals of various ages socio-economic and educational backgrounds.
- Physical Demands: A routine part of the positions responsibilities would be to transport materials to and from teaching/event locations including loading and unloading the vehicle. The employee will frequently lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds. Set-up and tear-down of displays tables and chairs would be necessary at many teaching sites.
- Environmental: Team driven office environment of professional character competence and collaboration. Deadline driven in terms of program planning and reporting. The position requires the employee to work outdoors at certain times of the year especially during the time of annual fair 4-H residential or day camps and youth recreation activities. This may occur during very hot and/or inclement weather.
- Visual Acuity: Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data and presentations.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION: Graduation from High School (or GED)
EXPERIENCE: Five years experience performing a variety of duties in support of the teaching demonstration and advising work of Extension agents or in community outreach health care research or social services programs.
OTHER: A non-commercial Class C or equivalent drivers license valid in the State of Maryland.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Working knowledge in the assigned area of specialization such as food and nutrition housing horticulture soil nutrient management or youth programs. Skill to plan and carry out details of projects with general instruction. Skill to make arithmetic calculations analyze data and draw conclusions. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Skill to establish and maintain successful working relationships. Ability to lift and transport supplies and equipment. Ability to operate manual and automated office equipment and personal computers.
OTHER:
Except for qualifications established by law additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge skills and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
