The Opportunity

WSDOTs Field Exploration Unit is seeking two Transportation Technicians to serve as Drillers Helpers. This unique opportunity is for individuals who have experience in the field or who are interested in getting into the field at an entry-level. At an entry or intermediate level the responsibilities associated with this position involve assisting the driller and drilling inspector in advancing geotechnical borings performing testing installing instrumentation in the borings and designing various types of work safety zones. At the advanced level you will work as a skilled journey-level technician performing geotechnical field exploration testing and sampling. Our top candidates must enjoy working outdoors traveling for work and working with their hands!


What to Expect

These positions will perform physical work while exposed to hazardous conditions or materials and traffic which may include traffic at a field site along a roadway at a construction site or in a warehouse.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles theGeotechnical Drillers Helpers will:

  • Conduct subsurface testing and sampling for bridges retaining walls soil cuts and fills rock slopes landslides pits and quarries statewide.
  • Utilize the WSDOT Traffic Manual and FHWA MUTCD guidelines to design set up and maintain work safety zones.
  • Install geotechnical monitoring instrumentation such as slope inclinometers open standpipe piezometers grout in place/not grout in place vibrating wire piezometers etc.
  • Operate the electric cone penetrometer and seismic cone penetrometer to collect insitu data on soil shear strength soil pore pressure dissipation and shear wave properties of the soil.
  • Transport testing sampling and support equipment to and from the field exploration sites.
  • Maintain daily records on field testing and sampling activities.


Qualifications

These are Transportation Technician 3 positions. However the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level in theclassification seriesbased on candidate qualifications providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal in-training plan.


To be considered as a Transportation Technician 1 or 2 the following skills competencies and credentials are required:

  • Workplace Safety: Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply flagger training and certification requirements to establish safe work zones.
  • Respectful Workplace: Demonstrated commitment to learning and growth. The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
  • A valid drivers license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles with andthe ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License Class A with (N) endorsement and without air brake restriction.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work out of town for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to obtain Flagger Training with certification within 45 days of appointment.
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.


To be considered for a Transportation Technician 3 position the following are also required:

  • A valid Washington State CDL drivers license (Class A) with (N) endorsement and without air brake restriction.
  • A valid Washington State DOE Resource Protection license.
  • 24- or 40-hour Hazwoper Training.
  • Flagger Training with certification.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Field and Drill Crew Expertise: Experience working on a drill crew or in geotechnical field operations including performing manually demanding tasks in various environments.
  • Mechanical and Field Skills:Experience in mechanical or fabrication tasks/fields supporting field operations and equipment maintenance.
  • Any of the following certifications and/or training:
    • A valid Washington State DOE Resource Protection License.
    • 24- or 40-hour Hazwoper Training.
    • Flagger Training with certification.
    • First aid and CPR training.
