Whats the role

At Westpac our mainframe environment underpins critical workloads and drives business innovation and agility. We are seeking an experienced Chief Engineer with proven expertise in designing and delivering mainframe projects including compute and storage. The ideal candidate will also have a strong understanding of mainframe modernisation strategies and emerging AI and ML technologies relevant to mainframe environments.

The team is made up of a diverse group of highly skilled professionals with expertise across various IT disciplines. While this role primarily focuses on mainframe systems you may also be expected to contribute to other domains as required such as cloud midrange storage data centres automation AI networks and security.

Your responsibilities will include driving system improvement and evolution overseeing the selection and design of software and hardware solutions and managing reporting and planning activities. You will also be responsible for fostering a high-performance culture and supporting training and skills development for yourself and others.

What do I need

Essential:

  • Extensive experience architecting designing developing and implementing solutions on mainframe hardware platforms.
  • Vendor engagement technical and sales.
  • z/OS
  • Ability to code in one or more mainframe languages.

Desirable:

  • Agentic AI skills
  • Mainframe virtualisation
  • zLinux / USS
  • Subsystems some of CICS IMS VTAM WAS MQ IODF ACF2 RACF etc containers networking data architecture monitoring artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning (ML) automated governance & compliance.
  • Ability to identify and nurture talent.
