About the Opportunity:
As a Civic Education Tour Guide you will conduct guided in-person and virtual tours of the Capitol Campus helping citizensespecially studentslearn about Washingtons government process and opportunities for civic engagement. You will provide a welcoming and positive customer service experience for visitors while also supporting the logistical and safety needs of the tour addition you will contribute to program development and special projects that enhance the overall visitor experience and strengthen public understanding of state government.

Duties

Some of What Youll Enjoy Doing Includes:

  • Conduct guided in-person and virtual tours including civic education public and customized tours.
  • Provide a welcoming high-quality customer service experience for all visitors.
  • Represent the State by welcoming assisting and escorting individuals and groups and providing information and directions.
  • Lead tours for visitors with disabilities ensuring accessibility and accommodation needs are met.
  • Operate and troubleshoot technology used for virtual tours.
  • Maintain and expand knowledge of Washington State government and Capitol Campus history.
  • Provide logistical and safety support for the tour program.
  • Greet and direct arriving Civic Education Tour buses coordinate with staff and assist groups at arrival.
  • Collect store and manage lunches and restricted items for school groups.
  • Supervise the student lunchroom and communicate expectations for lunch and tour schedules.
  • Other duties as needed.

Work Environment:
These positions work within the State Capitol Visitor Services program and conduct guided informational and educational tours of the Capitol Campus and surrounding buildings. Travel between buildings maintaining control of large groups of people sometimes in inclement weather is required. The incumbents must be able to stand and/or walk up to three hours at a time on hard floor surfaces and walk up and down stairs (sometimes up to four flights of stairs at a time). These positions maintain order and management of large groups of up to 50 individuals or more and must be able to speak clearly and effectively for long periods.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of experience with volunteer or paid tour guiding teaching or public speaking.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite.
  • Ability to guide manage interact and present information to K-12 student groups.
  • Ability to manage large and small groups.
  • Ability to present complex information convey ideas and facts and use language the audience will understand.
  • Skilled at organizing information managing records and research.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in education political science museum studies theater history or a related field.
  • General knowledge of Federal State and Local government processes
  • Knowledge of Washington State History.
