Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director Housing & Conference Services the Campus Store Manager:

  • Controls the operations of the University Campus Store and SMUshop.
  • Provides complete course materials and other value-added services to Faculty Students and Staff.
  • Applies a thorough knowledge of retail merchandising e-commerce and management methods and procedures in directing operations.
  • Is responsible for meeting or exceeding the stores sales goals and identifying business opportunities to drive sales.
  • Supervises full time staff part-time staff and student assistants by assigning tasks delegating responsibilities setting goals with staff and evaluates performance on an annual basis.
  • Prepares and monitors annual sales forecasts. Develops annual capital and operating budgets.
  • Approves expenditures payment of invoices credit notes and daily sales reports.
  • Reviews monthly financial statements to ensure Campus Store / SMUshop operations are maintaining profitability. Implements and monitors performance metrics to measure success.
  • Gathers compiles and analyzes financial data and resolves discrepancies.
  • Determines appropriate inventory based on budgets sales reports and market trends. Manages annual inventory count and prepares year-end report. Determines inventory to be written off.
  • Oversees and monitors accounts receivable.
  • Develops and implements internal controls to safeguard the assets of the Campus Store / SMUshop including cash and inventories.
  • Oversees all aspects of course materials acquisition based on faculty needs.
  • Investigates and implements best practices for course material ordering by faculty.
  • Proactively researches industry trends and new technology surrounding course material acquisition.
  • Determines optimal mix of products/services sold in the store utilizing social networking to facilitate sales and feedback. Determines quantities pricing and vendor selection. Negotiates with vendors to ensure best prices are obtained.
  • Investigates evaluates and implements improvements expansion and the addition/termination of products and services available through the store and through the e-commerce site.
  • Strategically positions Campus Store / SMUshop as the main source for all branded items for the University the Faculties Athletics and Recreation and Alumni. Facilitates the ordering of merchandise for University departments as required including in-store needs/representation.
  • Researches and recommends programs policies and procedures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Campus Store / SMUshop function including new software internal controls electronic payment technologies and customer service.
  • Ensures effectiveness of management & POS systems supporting sales inventory and general administrative functions in the Campus Store / SMUshop. Recommends and implements enhancements and/or new systems when necessary.
  • Effectively utilizes computer equipment and software in the performance of duties; learns specialized computer applications. Ensures staff is trained on the effective use of all systems.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Campus Store Manager you will have:

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Minimum three years supervisory experience in a general merchandise retail business which included responsibility for ordering sales merchandising inventory control cash handling and use of computer equipment and software.
  • University / retail Campus Store experience is an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Vena.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience; unionized environment considered an asset.
