Job Summary

The RPN is responsible for initiation monitoring and discontinuation of hemodialysis treatments of hemodialysis patients. As a member of the inter-professional team providing person-centred care the RPN will complete patient assessments health teaching & family counselling documentation set-up/monitoring & trouble shooting of hemodialysis machines and respond to rapid changes in the patients hemodynamic status within the scope of practice for a hemodialysis RPN in partnership with the RNs/ Interprofessional team. The RPN will play an active role in the unit on quality improvement/research project teams.


Qualifications :

  • Completion of college or other approved Registered Practical Nursing Program required.
  • Current certificate of registration in good standing from the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program Level II: Basic Rescuer certification required.
  • Completion of a medication course for RPNs required
  • Nephrology 1 to 4 courses completed from a recognized Nephrology Nursing Certificate Program (Successful applicants who had not  completed the Nephrology course will be expected to enroll within one year and complete within three years)
  • Health Assessment / Physical Assessment required
  • Minimum 5 years medical/surgical acute care nursing experience required
  • Minimum of  5 years of hemodialysis experience or equivalent combination of education training and experience
  • Experience with medication administration (by multiple routes) required.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong team building and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent patient assessment skills
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance with UHN standards
