Position: Director of Information Technology

Location: Central Office Building

Reports to: Superintendent of Schools

Salary: Director Salary Scale

Job Description:

The Director of Information Technology will design configure install maintain and repair network systems subsystems and servers; oversee the purchase and ongoing maintenance of computer/server operations and environment; provide information direction and/or recommendations regarding network installations and configurations including but not limited to television intercom telephone and wireless systems; resolve network operational issues; and provide technical support to school system and site staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science Information Technology or equivalent training/experience in computer science information technology technology management programming or network administration experience
  • Multiple years of progressively responsible technology management experience in areas to include but not limited to integrated systems student information human resources and finance as well as network planning architecture and infrastructure and maintaining a database of all physical technology assets for the county
  • Programing and network administration experience
  • Ability to explain computer-related technologies in laymens terms
  • Strong stakeholder-service orientation
  • Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to interact successfully with diverse stakeholders (i.e. students staff administration parents general public community agencies etc.)
  • Successful management of confidential information and materials
  • History of initiative discretion leadership and independent judgment
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities with a keen attention to detail
  • History of professionalism and strong work ethic
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for staff and other stakeholders
  • Strong project management and analytical skills including large scale project management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Information Technology Computer Science or related field
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of information technology.
  • Leadership experience of others in the field of information technology
  • Three (3) years of experience in network administration including but not limited to TCP/IP network security and anti-virus and anti-spam techniques
  • Three (3) years of experience in coordination and implementation of computer/peripheral systems including but not limited to planning specifications development purchasing installation training troubleshooting and repair
  • Knowledge of Powerschools Education platform
  • Familiarity with PreK-12 public education systems including business and administrative applications and infrastructure as well as associated system goals programs and initiatives
  • Familiarity with applications for student information systems electronic grading systems integrated office/enterprise applications online data storage and content management systems
  • Professional certifications in networking technology database management and related systems are a plus

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as principal advisor and consultant to the Superintendent on matters related to strategies and planning for all divisions of technology for ACPS
  • Serve as liaison with the Maryland State Department of Education in areas related to technology
  • Administer devices systems and servers related to school system to ensure availability to users
  • Assess incidents complaints and/or accidents for the purpose of recommending a successful resolution.
  • Oversee computer networks for ensuring effective and efficient operating systems.
  • Direct IT personnel for the purpose of prioritizing project deadlines and ensuring optimal utilization of personnel.
  • Install network software on a variety of platforms for the purpose of upgrading and maintaining school systems WAN/LAN and telecommunication systems.
  • Manage assigned projects and program components for the purpose of delivering services in accordance with established polices and administrative procedures.
  • Secure all servers and maintain up to date IT standards to ensure that users can be creative and effective in a controlled and secure environment
  • Prepare and monitor a disaster recovery including backup servers.
  • Provide repair and upgrades to hardware networks and software.
  • Develop bid specifications for new and replacement hardware and software.
  • Coordinate the selection recommendation and purchase of equipment and support materials.
  • Develop and maintain accurate inventory of all technology equipment.
  • Coordinate and provide in-service and hands-on training for hardware and software applications as needed.
  • Prepare and manage the Information Technology budget.
  • Seek grant and alternative funding opportunities in collaboration with MSDE and other appropriate sources.
  • Maintain accuracy and quality in any and all written materials.
  • Maintain limited inventory of parts and materials.
  • Take all necessary safety precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment materials and facilities.
  • Serve on school system committees as appropriate and assigned.
  • Engage in life-long learning of professional and technical knowledge by attending appropriate workshops reviewing professional publications and websites establishing personal networks and participating in job-related professional development.
  • Present courteous and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
