The Role

We are looking for a Technical Officer to support the Single Domain Antibodies team in our Human Health Therapeutics Research Centre. The incumbent would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity Excellence Respect and Creativity.


A typical day for the successful candidate will involve planning executing and analyzing data from a very diverse array of laboratory experiments used to isolate produce and characterize antibody-based samples (e.g. recombinant protein production antibody library generation and screening antibody purification and characterization). This day may also include training in one or several different techniques - as well as helping to train other colleagues assisting in administrative and support roles such as purchasing of reagents/supplies preparing scientific reports assisting in the development of new assays attending internal and external meetings writing standard operating procedures (SOPs) documenting experiments in laboratory notebooks general maintenance of equipment and laboratory facilities and presenting data at internal meetings. You will interact with and have the opportunity to learn from a diverse array of teams within the NRC community that have different expertise as well as many Canadian industrial (Biotech/Pharma) and academic partners.

This Technical Officer position would appeal to someone who is interested in the biology of disease and eager to learn how antibody-based therapeutic drugs are isolated characterized and developed to treat human diseases such as cancer.


The position would also interest someone who is flexible and has a passion for working hands-on in a laboratory setting learning new techniques helping to find solutions to challenging scientific problems and interacting with other scientists with diverse backgrounds.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

College diploma in biochemistry microbiology molecular biology biotechnology or a related field.

Experience

  • Experience conducting experiments in a molecular biology lab using techniques such as the isolation of RNA cDNA synthesis PCR RT-PCR cloning DNA sequencing oligonucleotide design and agarose gel electrophoresis.
  • Experience in protein expression purification and characterization including protein expression in bacteria mammalian cells or other cell types and protein characterization techniques such as SDS-PAGE Western blot ELISA SEC SPR and circular dichroism spectroscopy.
  • Experience interpreting technical direction from a variety of sources including standardized operating procedures publications and patents.
  • Experience in antibody phage display library generation antibody selection and/or antibody characterization would be considered an asset.

Reliability Status

For a Reliability Status verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required.

Technical Competencies

  • Strong knowledge in molecular biology and protein biochemistry.
  • Ability to prepare manipulate and store biological samples.
  • Ability to design and conduct recombinant DNA experiments such as DNA cloning DNA sequencing PCR and nucleic acid purification.
  • Ability to design and conduct recombinant protein expression purification manipulation and characterization.
  • Knowledge of basic functional assays for antibodies/proteins.
