Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

We are hiring for an Instructional Assistant (IA) to provide quality educational programs through sound instruction to meet the individual needs of residents/students as well as the standards defined under the Commonwealths statutes and program certification requirements. The Instructional Assistant reports directly to an Assistant Principal or the Principal.

Must successfully complete Department of Juvenile Justices Basic Skills and Handle with Care training. Ability to obtain certifications in First Aid and CPR

Core Responsibilities: (Not limited to)

  • Professional Knowledge - Assists teachers in integrating key content elements and facilitates students use of higher-level thinking skills in instruction. Ability to link present content with past and future learning experiences other subject areas and real-world experiences and applications.
  • Instructional Planning - Conducts orientation within a students first week. Orientation includes welcome introduction to the class a personal interview and a review of the class behavioral procedures and expectations. Collects and analyzes student-learning data to guide instructional planning.
  • Instructional Delivery - Reinforces learning goals consistently throughout lessons. Uses a variety of effective instructional strategies and resources.
  • Assessment of/for Student Learning - Support teacher in aligning student assessments with established curriculum standards and benchmarks.
  • Learning Environment - Work with the teacher to establish clear expectations with student input for classroom rules and procedures early in the school year and enforces them consistently and fairly.
  • Culturally Responsive Teaching and Equitable Practices - Fosters classroom environments that create opportunities for access and achievement by acknowledging valuing advocating and affirming cultural and social diversity in all aspects of the learning process including for gender race ethnicity English Language Learners and students with disabilities.
  • Professionalism - Collaborates and communicates effectively within the school community to promote students well-being and success. Adheres to federal and state laws agency policies ethical guidelines and procedural requirements. Incorporates learning from professional growth opportunities into instructional practice


Essential Skills: (Not limited to)

  • Ability to comprehend and interpret workplace policies and procedures
  • Ability stand and move around the classroom/unit efficiently
  • Ability to collect and analyze data
  • Ability address students academic needs - be flexible and adapt teaching strategies to address student need
  • Ability to remain organized in tracking lesson plans and other educational documents required for the job
  • Understanding of the intellectual social emotional and physical development of the age group as well as the cultural context

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience creating content or curriculums for instructional learning
  • Experience supervising youth or students in a classroom setting
  • Knowledge of classroom management and maintaining records
  • Experience collecting and analyzing student-learning data to guide instructional planning

Additional Considerations

  • Experience working in a secondary setting
  • Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred
