The Department of Philosophy & Religion within the College of Arts and Letters at The University of Tampa invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy beginning in August 2026.
The University of Tampa is a medium-sized comprehensive residentially-based private institution of more than 11000 undergraduate and graduate students. The University is ideally situated on a beautiful 110-acre campus next to the Hillsborough River adjacent to Tampas dynamic central business district which is a growing vibrant diverse metropolitan area. The area of specialization (AOS) is PHILOSOPHY OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (broadly construed). The area of concentration (AOC) is OPEN. The teaching load is 3 courses (12 credit hours) per semester and includes introductory-level undergraduate courses in Philosophy upper-level undergraduate courses in Philosophy and a general-education philosophy/humanities course with the theme Making Sense of the Local and the Global that is part of the general-education curriculum.
The successful candidate must have an established research program that concerns AI and be well-positioned to design and teach general education and major/minor courses related to AI. Ideal candidates will also be well-positioned to cultivate industry relationships conducive to students obtaining internships to prepare them for job-markets impacted by AI. An ability to teach Metaphysics and Epistemology (broadly construed) Logic Philosophy of Mind Ethics/Applied Ethics (including PHL 316 Ethics and Artificial Intelligence) and/or History of Philosophy (particularly Ancient Philosophy and Modern Philosophy) is highly desirable.
We are looking for a colleague who is committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching who is skilled at teaching general-education courses in ways that excite students while introducing them to meaningful inquiry in Philosophy who is able to attract a diverse group of students to become members of our department and who shares our departments commitment to inclusive pedagogy and research in support of the Mission of UTampas Office of Access and Community Programs.
The individual hired for this position will have a background in Philosophy that includes substantial graduate-level philosophical training and will maintain an active record of scholarship in Philosophy through publications. Other responsibilities include developing and managing ongoing outcomes assessment procedures student advising curriculum development and service to the department college university and broader community.
The Department of Philosophy & Religion currently has six full-time faculty and a number of part-time adjunct faculty. The department offers a B.A. degree in Philosophy and a Philosophy minor. Its many activities include the preparation and coaching of a successful Ethics College Bowl team and an active Philosophy Club.
Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely-related field must be in hand no later than August 15 2026. Teaching experience is required.
