About the Department Services:

The Education Services Division provides educational programs for expelled students troubled youth placed in a county-operated juvenile institution and students on probation who want an alternative to the traditional high school campus. The Juvenile Probation Department is solely responsible for all programs of the Excel Academy Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP) Excel Academy Charter School and the Opportunity Center.

About the Position:

The Learning Specialist will provide direct instructional support to students including those with learning differences while enrolled in the Excel Academy Charter School. The Learning Specialist will assist in carrying out high-quality education to prepare students for secondary school completion training employment or further education. Academics are delivered in both the classroom setting and during Bridge time which includes electives enrichment and credit addition the Learning Specialist will develop and implement academic initiatives during the summer to promote continued student achievement and success.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with teachers residential facility staff and school personnel to provide direct instructional support to students.

  • Analyzes lesson plans and Edmentum assessment data to determine student academic needs.

  • Develops strategies to address learning and improve academic performance.

  • Maintains organized and accurate records of services rendered.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Education or a related fieldfrom an accredited college or university.

  • Two (2) or more years of teaching experience.

  • Two (2) or more years of working with youth involved in the juvenile justice system.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to analyze students education data to determine educational needs.

  • Working knowledge of Texas Public School Programs state academic requirements and of juvenile probation departments.

  • Working knowledge of teaching pedagogy and social-emotional learning.

  • Ability to interpret lesson plans and assessment data to support differentiated instruction.

  • Knowledge of graduation requirements.

  • Knowledge of diagnostic procedures education of special education students human development and learning theories.

  • Must be 21 years of age.

Additional Requirements:

  • Upon receiving a conditional job offer each applicant must undergo a criminal background check a tuberculosis (TB) skin test and a drug screening.

  • Applicants must possess and maintain a valid Texas Drivers License and carry liability insurance that meets or exceeds the minimum legal requirements.

  • In the event of a declared public emergency by the county staff may be reassigned to different duties facilities or placed under the supervision of another county department.

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.

  • This position involves working with challenging youth where the use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Regular Full-time

  • Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 3:30 pm

    • May be required to work late nights or weekends on occasion.

Salary:

  • $60594.41 - $76438.35Annually

  • Depends on Qualifications
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods
