JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Head Bus Mechanic
Supervisor: Director of Transportation
Description: Responsible for performing repairs developing and conducting a preventativemaintenance program and maintaining in proper working order all school vehicles.
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
Essential Functions:
- Ensure safety of students
- Repairs school vehicles in compliance with State of Ohio regulations and Ohio State Patrol inspections including motor overhaul body repairs and unit replacements.
- Maintains proper vehicle identification brake adjustments lighting checks tire wear and other safety requirements to ensure maximum daily vehicle use.
- Diagnoses the causes of malfunctions of vehicles and helps to schedule and complete necessary repairs minimizing downtime of vehicles.
- Maintains records of maintenance for each transportation vehicle.
- Carries out a preventative maintenance program and reports the condition of vehicles or equipment and anticipated future repairs or needs to the Director of Transportation. Checks for parts needed and assists in the arrangement for location and pickup as directed.
- Washes buses when appropriate.
- Drives emergency bus routes in the confines of the normal working day as determined by the Director of Transportation.
- Maintains eligibility status as a bus driver as stated in the Ohio Pupil Transportation Laws and Regulations issued by the Ohio Department of Education.
- Maintains an established record of vehicle operational and repair costs.
- Participates in training and improvement programs and shares working knowledge with other mechanics and personnel.
- Assists Director of Transportation in starting buses and in moving buses answering telephone calls locating and picking up parts road testing vehicles etc.
- Operates radio communication system as necessary.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in wrecker operation or recovery duty in case of vehicular breakdown or accident.
- Assists in the care and cleanliness of the garage and security of the building and contents.
- Performs other duties that may be assigned that may arise pertaining to the garage and vehicle operation as directed by the Director of Transportation.
- Complies with all Louisville Board of Education policies and procedures.
- Complies with student confidentiality matters as they relate to medical and/or special education situations.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- 2 years experience as a mechanic
- Knowledge of transmissions cooling and heating systems electrical and mechanical systems
- Knowledge of diesel motor repair and maintenance
- State of Ohio Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
- State of Ohio Class B school bus and passenger endorsement commercial drivers license with air brake
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

- Vehicle repair/maintenance/diagnostic equipment and tools (i.e. air tools).
- School Truck.
- School Bus.
- Power Washer.
- Computer and related equipment.
- Electric plugs for diesels.
- Safety equipment.
- Communication radio.
- Telephones faxes and copier machines.
Additional Working Conditions:
- Occasional exposure to blood bodily fluids and tissue
- Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions
- Use of air tools hydraulic tools and tools that operate with the use of electricity (110V and 220V).
- Frequent requirement to travel throughout the district
- Occasional requirement to work overtime
- Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions i.e. requirement to work outdoors during all types of weather
- Frequent exposure to loud noise
- Frequent repetitive hand motion
- Frequent requirement to sit stand walk talk hear see (color vision required) read speak reach stretch with hands and arms crouch climb balance kneel and stoop
- Frequent requirement to lift and carry various items up to a maximum of 60 pounds
- Occasional requirement to push and pull up to 300 pounds with proper lift equipment
- Complies with all Louisville Board of Education policies and procedures
