About the Role:

This position will focus primarily on the incorporation of sustainabilityinto the capital improvement projects of King Countys Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD). It willlead sustainable materials and construction and demolition (C&D) materials managementfor WTD and support various other sustainability initiatives including solar installations Green Operations and Maintenance effortsandsecuring sustainable grant and funding opportunities.This role will also coordinate across WTDs capital portfolio toassistcapitalprojects pursing third-party building certifications.Along with green building technicalexpertiseand capital project management skills the successful candidate will have a strong commitment and passion for sustainable design and mitigating the impacts climate change. Candidates will be self-motivated and detail oriented. They will have a strong ability to communicate complicated subject matter and work effectively on a variety of capital project and program teams.

About the Team:

This position will be supervised by the Climate Energy and Sustainability Supervisor. The Climate Energy and Sustainability work group is part of the Resource Recovery Unit in WTDs Operations and Maintenance Section. The Resource Recovery Unit strives to bring valuable resources technology and sound business practices together to deliver products and programs that inspire our customers to be part of an environmentally sustainable futuretoday. Itis responsible forensuring safe environmentally friendly products are made from an urban renewable waste stream including Loop biosolids soil amendment recycled water and renewable energy as well as managing programs including sustainability energy technology assessment and nutrient management.

The Climate Energy and Sustainability work group includes the Sustainability Program. This team is focused on development and implementation of King County sustainability policies including the King County Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP) and Green Building Ordinance (GBO). Work performed by the team includes efforts to increase green building use of low-embodied carbon construction materials green O&M efforts and construction and demolition waste diversion in WTD operations and capital projects.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Serve as a green building and sustainable design subject matter expert to WTDs capital program and projects along with other sustainability initiatives such as solar installations and green O&M

  • Educatecapital project and operations staffonsustainable materials andconstruction and demolitionmaterial managementand supportthe implementation of these efforts on WTD capital projects

  • Coordinate acrossand provide technicalassistanceforcapital projectspursuing third-partygreen building project certificationsincluding LEED Envision Living Building Challengeand Salmon-Safe

  • Develop resources toolsandcommunicationsfor WTD staffthat advance sustainability effortswithin the agency

  • Collaborate and partner with finance onsustainabilityfunding and grantsopportunitiesfor WTD projects and programs

  • Support WTDs Sustainability Program and other duties as assigned

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Bachelors degree insustainabilityenvironmental studiesengineeringarchitecture oranother related course of study or a combination of work experience and education in one of these fields which providesthe skills and knowledgefor the job.
  • Knowledge of and work experience with sustainability concepts such as sustainable infrastructureconstruction anddemolition material management sustainable materialsthird-party sustainability scorecards greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions reduction climate mitigation equity social justice and community engagement.
  • Familiarity with the King County Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP) and Green Building Ordinance (GBO) and/orexperience with the practical application and tracking compliance/reporting ofsustainability policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and develop programguidance procedures correspondence and technical reports.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate highly technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:


  • Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role work remotely from a home location with occasional onsite reporting requirements (3-4 days per month for team collaboration and field visits). The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites throughout the WTD service area including the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St Seattle WA 98104) and treatment plant facilities.
  • Requirement:Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.
  • Work Schedule:This full-time position works a 40-hour work week Monday-Friday. This position is not covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible
  • Union Representation:This position is represented by the Technical Employees Association (TEA)
