Job Description

Located in Wilmington NC Cape Fear Academy is southeastern North Carolinas premier PK3-12 independent school. A learning community of nearly 800 students and 144 faculty and staff members CFA is guided by the mission of discovering and developing individual potential. CFAs academic curriculum establishes clear coordinated goals for each course and grade level while still allowing teachers the freedom to be creative and innovative in their instructional choices. Position: Director of Advancement


The Director of Advancement is a Full-Time Salaried Exempt Senior Management Leadership Team position at Cape Fear Academy that is responsible for community engagement and advancing the school through programming in development marketing communications special events and constituent relations. The Director of Advancement collaborates with the Head of School and the schools leadership team to provide strategic direction to protect and enhance the schools image internally and externally consistent with the mission and values of Cape Fear Academy.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Establish and execute forward-thinking strategically-sound advancement programs that optimally grow the annual fund major giving capital campaigns and legacy gifts through planned giving.
  • Nurture and maintain a highly collaborative relationship with the Head of School the board development committee the board chair and individual board members supporting them in their fundraising responsibilities and accompanying them on donor visits when appropriate.
  • Work with the Director of Communications and coordinate with the Director of Enrollment to create and produce fund raising-related enrollment and admissions marketing materials to expand and enhance the schools visibility and reputation.
  • Manage team of four full-time employees and one part-time employee who oversee the annual fund communications and marketing graphic design volunteer engagement special events and alumni relations.
  • Develop and enhance relationships with area businesses and organizations while building new relationships systems and programs that tap into the generosity and resources of the community.
  • Work with the Assistant Director of Advancement for Alumni Relations to strengthen relationships with the schools alumni and further develop alumni programming as well as oversee the Assistant Director of Advancement for Volunteer Engagement & Events in the planning and operation of the Family Partnership.
  • Oversee all internal communications to include weekly emails and news plus annual and episodic printed communications.
  • Manage the organization and oversight of all major special events to include cross-divisional activities donor events Homecoming Grandparent & Special Friends Days Biennial Auction Salute to Seniors and Commencement.
  • Serve on the Leadership Team and Crisis Management Team.
  • Oversee budget for the Advancement Department and maintain accurate records for reporting to the board committee and Director of Finance and Business.
  • Annually engage in one student related activity to connect to our mission such as serving as a chaperone for a student trip advise a student organization coach or serve as an advisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of development and fundraising practices and strategies.
  • Proven success in directly soliciting and closing charitable gifts.
  • Experience working with and motivating volunteers and staff members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with all the schools constituents while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to develop and foster good relationships with a significant segment of community leaders and external media outlets.
  • Experience in planning and executing special events.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strategic thinker with a can-do attitude.
  • Passionate about working with a wide range of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Outstanding knowledge of fundraising data software and database management software.
  • Ability to collaborate prioritize organize exercise good judgment and model Cape Fear Academys core values of respect integrity resilience and accountability.

Education: Bachelors degree required Masters degree preferred.


Experience: 12 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and in fundraising and 10 years experience managing development marketing admissions or other advancement personnel. Independent school experience preferred.


Equivalency: Directly related experience or a combination of directly related education and experience may be considered in place of the above requirements.


Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

  • Must be able to sit or stand at a workstation with a computer for extended periods.
  • Must be capable of extended and frequent use of computer phone and other essential office equipment.
  • Must have vision abilities commensurate with role and ability to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to lift objects less than 20 lbs. very occasionally when assisting with events.
  • Will need to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Required to work with frequent recurring deadlines.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with sometimes frequent interruptions.
