POSITION TITLE

Lead School Safety Officer

DEPARTMENT:

POSITION SUMMARY: The Lead School Safety Officer (SSO) supports and facilitates the educational process within the Confluence Academies school system by providing a safe and secure environment through building and establishing meaningful relationships with students and staff and proactively interacting with the school community to ensure the enforcement of city and state laws preservation of public order protection of life and the prevention and detection of crimes committed on school grounds. The Lead SSO will work effectively with students parents school personnel and community agencies to support teaching and learning in the schools. The Lead SSO will patrol network/campus property to protect students staff and visitors from physical harm and prevent loss to network property resulting from criminal activity. The Lead SSO has the overall responsibility for interacting with school administrators and staff ensuring an environment in all Confluence Academies schools that is both safe and conducive for learning and teaching across all the campuses.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Lead Duties:

  • The Lead SSO is responsible for providing leadership guidance schedules and training to School Safety Officers.
  • Respond to after-hour alarm calls.
  • Accompany school staff on welfare checks and home visits for students and families during school hours and after hours as needed as requested by the Chief Executive Officer and Director of Operations.
  • Be on call twenty-four hours seven days a week (24/7) including holidays and non-school days to respond to safety and security issues.
  • Ensure that all campuses conduct and record all safety drills as required by law.
  • Assist campus administrators and Coordinator of School Safety in preparing appropriate security department budgets.

School Safety Officer Duties:

  • Patrol campus property for suspicious activity unauthorized persons on campus or unauthorized vehicles.
  • Provide in-service training to help administrators and staff be better prepared to deal with security-related matters and serve as a wrap-around services team member to support student success.
  • Serve as a visible and active safety officer on campus dealing with law-related areas such as drugs traffic trespassing fighting and thefts.
  • Enforce campus rules and regulations.
  • Conduct routine patrols of campus to include buildings parking lots and playground. Operate network equipment to include alarm systems and surveillance equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with public safety agencies to serve as liaison between school and community to deter criminal and delinquent behavior.
  • Coordinate security for crowd and vehicle control at extra-curricular activities and special events.
  • Monitor and instruct students visitors and district personnel on proper and lawful campus or faculty behavior. Help to define and maintain a respectful code of conduct.
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies with incidents involving local criminal activity that may impact the safety of the environment for students and staff. Serve as the initial first responder and school safety coordinator for campus emergencies during school hours and scheduled extra-curricular activities.
  • Respond to calls on crimes against persons or property in progress report crimes that have already occurred and intrusion/fire alarms: perform preliminary investigation at the scene (e.g. gather and preserve evidence take statements). Prepare written reports maintain daily logs and obtain and serve arrest and search warrants as necessary; testify in court as required.
  • Subdue offenders and criminals by using the minimum amount of force needed to protect the officer and other persons.
  • Provide instructions and directions to others as it pertains to school safety enforcement matters and emergency situations.
  • Conduct security building assessments for schools; guard check and secure doors rooms buildings and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisory personnel and school administrators.
  • The Lead School Safety Officer may be assigned to other schools within Confluence Academies on a temporary or permanent basis depending upon need and circumstances.
  • Assist administrative staff personnel in maintaining orderly conduct during school hours
  • Conduct coordinate and evaluate emergency drill practices/procedures for fire tornado earthquake and active intruders.
  • Inventory and issue keys and alarm codes as required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required. Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent plus five (5) years experience and successful completion of course work in police administration; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Two (2) years in a leadership role. Experience working with students and administration in a culturally diverse public school environment is required.

Certification: Private Security License.

Language Skills: Ability to effectively communicate. Ability to read analyze and interpret incident reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff students co-workers and the general public.

Computer Skills: Ability to use on a basic level Microsoft office product (word excel power point) email and internet.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions and act accordingly.

Reliable Transportation: The lead role will require the incumbent to respond to after school hours emergencies as well as travel between campuses and within the community. Mileage will be reimbursed by the district but the incumbent must have reliable transportation.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all school system requirements and Board of Directors policies. Ability to utilize technology to assist in day to day operations for students programs and staff.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires meeting deadlines interacting with the public and staff irregular or extended work hours. The employee is responsible for safety well-being and work output of him/herself. Must be able to meet demands from several people at one time.
