You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailThe Intertribal Agronomist will work as part of a team in the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at UW-Madison. This position will lead and support agricultural initiatives and practices that align with tribal values food sovereignty goals increased food production and capacity and sustainable land management practices. This position is responsible for providing agronomic expertise supporting on-farm tribal research based on respective community input and implementing culturally relevant agricultural programs to benefit tribal members on tribal lands. This position aids in combining larger scale sound agricultural practices with indigenous-centered practices to increase food production sustainably.
Key responsibilities of the position include: Agricultural and soils planning support and technical assistance (e.g. develop crop management plans tailored to tribal lands and climate; advise on sustainable soil and pest management); cultural integration (collaborate with tribal elders and knowledge keepers to incorporate traditional ecological knowledge into agricultural methods; support the cultivation and restoration of culturally significant plants and heritage crops); develop and manage research trials to test new crops or techniques on tribal farms; foster and develop outreach and education collaboration with tribal governments tribal departments tribal colleges and universities and nonprofits. To be successful in this position you will need to have strong communication leadership and problem-solving skills.
This position can be performed onsite or remotely. Work hours are typically 8 am - 4 pm Monday - Friday; however weekend and evening hours may be necessary. A valid drivers license and the ability to receive UW drivers authorization is required. This position requires extensive travel throughout Wisconsin. A criminal background check is required.

The minimum salary for this position is $60000. However final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.

Experience in agricultural production working with tribal communities or on tribal lands
Applied understanding of tribal food systems and tribal sovereignty
Project management experience to include managing multiple projects setting deadlines reporting and prioritizing and delegating tasks
Demonstration of effective communication with tribal stakeholders (e.g. reports educational events)
Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency in soil and crop analysis
Experience writing grants and obtaining funding
Bachelors degree in agronomy soil science environmental studies natural resources or related field required
