Position Summary / Career Interest:
The University of Kansas Health System Phlebotomy Associate is a training position designed to develop venipuncture skill level knowledge base and competency while learning the functions of specimen collection: capillary and venipuncture as well as interpretation of lab orders under the supervision of the Phlebotomy Education Coordinator. Candidates may enter this role upon acceptance into the Phlebotomy Training Program. The Phlebotomy Associate may remain in this role for up to 6 months from hiring date to allow for program completion and onboarding into a Phlebotomist role if hired on after successful completion of the training program.
After education training and competency assessments the Phlebotomy Associate will perform functions essential to a phlebotomy draw station or inpatient team including customer service computer functions as they relate to orders patient identification venipuncture other specimen type collections specimen processing and mitigation techniques for adverse reactions.
The Phlebotomist is considered the face of the clinical laboratory and is expected to represent the laboratory and themselves in a professional respectful and courteous manner at all times. This role is often the first exposure a patient may have to The University of Kansas Health System.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions- Follows hospital / department guidelines for attendance and tardiness
- Attends and participates in all phlebotomy education classes and opportunities with expectation of learning:
- Hand hygiene and PPE
- Positive patient identification
- Equipment utilized in peripheral and capillary blood collection
- Straight needle
- Winged set (butterfly)
- Lancet devices for fingerstick
- Tourniquet
- Skin cleanser for routine draws and blood cultures
- Order of draw and why it is important including:
- Glass vs plastic
- Anticoagulants
- Clot activators
- Venipuncture site selection
- Venipuncture procedure / Capillary collection procedure
- Sample labeling
- Mitigation and treatment of adverse reactions
- Vaso-vagal
- Vomiting
- Troubleshooting problems encountered during collection
- Learns basics of coagulation cascade that lead to clotting of specimen in tube
- Bruising of the venipuncture site
- Hemolysis of specimen
- Specimen handling & processing
- Safety and Infection Prevention and Control
- Learns and demonstrates Customer/Patient Focus
- Ensures every patient encounter has a positive outcome
- Recognizes when to request assistance or support from experienced team member or leadership
- s about other specimen collections including urine sputum NP / Nasal throat stool
- Understands and is able to interpret test orders and know the appropriate tube for each test
- Demonstrates competence in patient interactions
- Demonstrates competence in blood collection procedures
- Learns how to administrate an Oral Glucose Tolerances
- Understands the physiology and background of glucose tolerance testing
- Successfully completes written and oral exams (2 each)
- Successfully demonstrates competence in venipuncture and capillary blood collection
- Successfully demonstrates providing patients with instructions for self collection of specimens
- Successfully completes final exam and demonstration of entire patient blood collection start to finish
- Must be able to perform the professional clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and ExperienceRequired Licensure and Certification- Valid drivers license and transportation in order to support other locations.
