Job Description
The Grounds Lead Worker will lead a specialized grounds crew in the field. This position will be responsible for the routine grounds maintenance of the south academic and administrative zone with an increased awareness of the changing needs of the overall operation of the campus as it relates to the performance of daily activities. The Lead and the crew will have the ability to work flexible schedules in order to meet the needs of the University and to provide support for weekend events. This position will be responsible for projects that include routine Grounds care special event preparation herbicide applications and mulching. This position will also assume supervisory duties of other Grounds Operations crews in time of the normal supervisors absence.
Required Qualifications
Experience in general grounds and landscape maintenance.
Ability to work independently on the weekends in the execution of duties.
Experience leading and directing crews in the completion of grounds maintenance and enhancement activities.
Ability to safely and frequently move and handle heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or more; ability to maneuver materials up and down stairs; ability to climb and work from elevated work stations such as ladders and scaffolds; ability to work for long periods of time standing walking reaching bending pushing/pulling.
Ability to communicate effectively have good team work skills and be able to understand comprehend and follow directions in the workplace.
Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions including extreme temperatures.
May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department.
May be required to alter shifts/hours to provide coverage for weekend events. Two weeks advance notice of a shift change will be provided if at all possible but is not guaranteed.
Must possess a Registered Technician License through VDACS; OR ability to obtain within six months of hire.
This is a designated emergency personnel position.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a large commercial or educational setting.
Commercial Pesticide Applicators License Category 3A & 3B.
Experience applying pesticides and fertilizers.
