Location: Carriage & Wagon Workshop Perambur Chennai
Reporting To: Project Manager (Retd. EME Officer)
Department: Project Execution
Employment Type: Full-Time Fixed Term (Initial Term: 24 Months)
Compensation:per month (Negotiable for exemplary profiles).

Position Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and responsible Site In-Charge to oversee and manage the daily operations at the project execution floor. Acting as the critical bridge between the workforce supervisors and the Project Manager the Site In-Charge will be responsible for ensuring that all shopfloor activities are executed efficiently safely and in accordance with project schedules quality standards and documentation protocols.

This role demands strong leadership a keen eye for detail and the ability to maintain discipline records and productivity across shifts.

Key Responsibilities

Operations Oversight

  • Oversee day-to-day operations on the shop floor including corrosion repair assembly and mechanical works on wagons as per work allotment.

  • Ensure that daily production targets and output goals are met in coordination with supervisors and workers.

  • Maintain discipline safety and punctuality of all site personnel.

Team & Workflow Coordination

  • Act as the key operational liaison between floor supervisors workers and the Project Manager.

  • Distribute tasks to teams based on wagon condition man-hour planning and repair categorization (Light/Medium/Heavy).

  • Conduct daily tool-box meetings to communicate priorities safety briefings and work status updates.

Documentation & Compliance Management

Maintain and update the following registers and logs on a daily basis and submit reports to the Project Manager:

  • Form A: Employee Register

  • Form B: Wages Register (supervisory input only)

  • Form C: Loan & Recovery Register

  • Form D: Attendance Register

  • Site Order Register: Capture instructions site decisions and compliance notes

  • Work Diary: Track daily work progress per wagon

  • Allotment Register: Record wagon assignment and team allocation

  • Material Issue Register: Record consumption of client-issued or internal stock items

  • Daily Breakdown Report (DBR) Register: Log equipment/tool downtime and corrective actions

  • PPE Issue Register: Monitor safety equipment issuance and compliance

  • Penalty Register: Track and report any performance safety or procedural deviations by labour or supervisors

Tools Equipment & Safety Oversight

  • Ensure all tools and plants (T&P) including welding machines grinders riveters and gas cutting sets are operational and logged.

  • Monitor and maintain tool inventory report losses damage or requirements proactively.

  • Enforce strict usage of PPE by all labour in accordance with Factory and Railway safety norms.

Reporting & Coordination

  • Submit consolidated daily reports on production manpower register updates and issues to the Project Manager.

  • Support the Project Manager in inspections client walkthroughs and quality checks

Candidate Profile

Qualifications

  • Diploma or BTech in Mechanical / Production / Fabrication Engineering or equivalent.

  • Strong preference for candidates with experience in railway workshops or defence/industrial fabrication projects.

  • Retired Personnel from Indian Army (EME Corps) Preferably Havaldar and Above Ranks.

    ITI with strong site supervision experience may also be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 8 years of supervisory or execution-level experience in shopfloor operations with a minimum of 2 years in a similar Site In-Charge role.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong knowledge of welding fabrication and mechanical repair workflows.

  • Hands-on experience in managing T&P and register-based documentation.

  • Familiarity with Railway workshop protocols and safety guidelines is an advantage.

  • Proficiency in basic MS Office tools and register maintenance.

  • Ability to lead motivate and enforce discipline within large blue-collar teams.

  • Daily Target Achievement (% of wagons/sections completed)

  • Register Accuracy & Timeliness (zero delay in record submission)

  • T&P Availability and Maintenance Compliance

  • Safety Adherence and PPE Utilization Rate

  • Labour Productivity and Discipline Score (weekly review)
