Head of PE

Reports To: Campus Principal / Head of Secondary

Supervises: 2 PE Teachers

Purpose of Role

To lead and manage the Physical Education department ensuring the delivery of a high-quality and engaging PE curriculum in line with the Cambridge IGCSE standards. The role involves strategic planning team leadership curriculum development and fostering a culture of excellence in sports and physical wellbeing across the school.

Key Responsibilities

Departmental Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for PE that supports the schools mission and the holistic development of students.
  • Lead regular department meetings to discuss planning assessment student needs and areas of improvement.
  • Ensure departmental objectives align with school-wide academic and co-curricular goals.

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Plan implement and evaluate the PE curriculum from primary to secondary ensuring alignment with Cambridge IGCSE and Key Stage objectives.
  • Maintain high-quality teaching standards through lesson observations feedback and professional support.
  • Introduce innovative and inclusive approaches to engage all students in physical education and sports.

Staff Management

  • Line manage two PE staff including performance appraisals professional development planning and day-to-day guidance.
  • Provide coaching and support to ensure consistent delivery and student engagement across the team.
  • Foster a collaborative and motivated departmental culture.

Assessment & Reporting

  • Oversee the development and implementation of effective assessment methods to monitor student progress.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of student achievement in both internal and external assessments.
  • Prepare students for IGCSE PE exams and ensure appropriate interventions for underperforming students.

Sports Programme Coordination

  • Coordinate inter-house and inter-school sports events competitions and co-curricular clubs.
  • Manage school teams coaching schedules training plans and fixture calendars.
  • Encourage and promote student participation in sports and fitness activities.

Resources & Facilities Management

  • Manage the departments budget ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Oversee the safe use and maintenance of sports equipment and facilities.
  • Liaise with maintenance or external vendors when necessary.

Safeguarding Health & Safety

  • Uphold the schools safeguarding policies and promote a safe environment during all physical activities.
  • Ensure all lessons events and sports activities comply with risk management and health and safety guidelines.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain regular communication with parents regarding student progress and sports involvement.
  • Collaborate with other departments leadership teams and external stakeholders to enhance the schools PE and sports offering.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Physical Education or related field (Masters degree preferred).
  • Teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent).
  • At least 5-6 years teaching experience with exposure to Cambridge IGCSE PE syllabus.
  • Proven leadership experience within a school setting (e.g. Head of Subject or Coordinator role).

Desirable Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisation and time management.
  • Experience in event and fixture planning.
  • Ability to inspire a team and promote school spirit through sports.
