Youth Counselor (Part Time)

Location: Rockford IL

Position summary

The Youth Counselor is responsible for providing evidence-informed age-appropriate youth intervention services in the following areas: Mentoring Caregiver Involvement Safe Place Programming Life Skills Employment Readiness and Development to the highest-risk Greater Illinois communities.

Compensation: $20 hourly

Hours: Part time Monday - Friday 3p - 7p up to 20 hours weekly

Responsibilities

  • Perform all work in a manner consistent with the National Youth Advocate Programs mission values and philosophies.
  • Supervises youth participants; provides youth participants with positive support guidance and training/development opportunities in coordination with both on-site or off-site youth activities and/or field trips.
  • Provide individual and group mentoring sessions to youth participants.
  • Provides instruction and monitors youth participants; maintains order during activities/games by counseling youth with behavioral challenges; documents and reports interactions; recommends disciplinary action as needed.
  • Develop and implement violence prevention programs and workshops.
  • Conduct assessments to identify the needs and strengths of each participant.
  • Create and maintain a safe inclusive and supportive environment for youth.
  • Collaborate with schools families and community organizations to coordinate services and support for participants.
  • Provide group curriculum geared toward program outcomes.
  • Effective group facilitation with behavior management skills.
  • Maintain accurate records of mentoring sessions progress notes and any other required documentation.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution and provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Educate youth about the effects of violence and teach coping strategies and conflict management skills.
  • Plan and lead activities that promote social skills self-esteem and positive peer relationships.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities. Performs other duties as requested.
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

The Youth Coordinator shall be at least 21 years of age and shall meet both of the following requirements for education and experience:

  • HS Diploma/GED Required. Bachelors degree in Social Work or other comparable human services degree preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience supervising youth and coordinating activities for youth.
  • Experience working with youth who have life challenges.
  • Experience with conflict resolution problem solving crisis management and motivational techniques.
  • Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers smart phones and tablets printers fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing spreadsheet and database programs.

Other skills

  • Must be able to embrace working as a diverse team both effectively and respectfully with persons of any background race color religion sexual orientation ability national origin or culture.
  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Must possess good verbal listening and written communication skills.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit talk or hear.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.

Driving and Vehicle Requirements

  • Valid drivers license
  • Reliable personal transportation
  • Good driving record
  • Minimum automobile insurance coverage of $10000/$300000 bodily injury liability
