Staff Software Engineer (m/f/d) - Web

As a Staff Software Engineer Web you will play a pivotal role in setting the technical direction across Wires web and desktop applications. You will collaborate cross-functionally influence multiple teams and drive architectural decisions that shape the future of secure real-time communication. Your impact will extend beyond writing code you will elevate engineering standards mentor others and lead initiatives that improve scalability performance and developer experience across the stack.

• Own and evolve the architecture of our web and Electron desktop apps ensuring performance (rendering memory) scalability (modularity extensibility) and maintainability (testability code clarity).

• Lead key technical initiatives such as modernizing legacy code improving DX and driving secure-by-default development practices (CSP XSS Electron hardening E2EE).

• Guide technical standards and decision-making through cross-team RFCs and close collaboration with backend and infra on APIs observability and deployment.

• Mentor engineers across teams and support knowledge sharing through reviews pairing and documentation.

• Strengthen team culture by contributing to hiring onboarding and growing technical maturity.

• Model collaborative leadership and help align teams around shared engineering principles.

• Actively contribute to feature delivery in collaboration with product design and other teams ensuring quality performance and accessibility.

• Align engineering decisions with Wires privacy-first mission and long-term product vision.

• Spot risks early shape priorities and drive sustainable technical execution across projects.

Youve built and maintained complex frontend systems acrossweb and desktopenvironments and know what it means to carry a feature from rough idea to production. You think in systems advocate for your decisions with clarity and know how to move teams forward even when the path isnt obvious. You lead by example scaling your impact through architectural vision technical mentorship and an ability to align teams across domains.

• 10 years in frontend or full-stack development with at least 2 years operating at a Staff or Principal level.

• Deep knowledge ofReactfrontendarchitecture patterns and performance optimization for real-time apps.

• Proficient withclient-side storage(e.g. IndexedDB)Web Workers and working with large in-browser data flows.

• Solid understanding ofmodular frontend infrastructure monorepos and build systems (Webpack Vite Nx etc).

• Proven experience working withsecure messaging protocols( at Rest or otherE2EEflows) is a strong advantage especially inprivacy-focused applicationsorElectron-based desktop environments.

• Familiar withcloud storage integration(e.g. S3) media/file flows and client-side streaming approaches.

• Expertise inscalable testing strategies includingunit integration and end-to-end testing with hands-on experience maintaining robust test coverage across frontend systems.

• Experience designing and evolvingCI/CD pipelinesusing tools likeGitHub ActionsandJenkins.

• Proven track record oftechnical mentorship helping Senior Engineers grow into Staff-level impact.

• Strong written and verbal communication capable of producinghigh-quality specsproposals andasync collaboration docs.

• Comfortable in ambiguity you createclarity direction and technical alignmentin uncertain or rapidly evolving contexts.
