Sergeant will demonstrate TSTC Core values of Excellence Accountability Service and Integrity with internal and external stakeholders customers students and members of the community.
Schedules and prioritizes work assignments for subordinates; authorizes overtime; provides on-the-job training; sets standards of quality and quantity for evaluation; supervises and evaluates the work of subordinates; handles minor disciplinary and performance problems; makes recommendations both for promotions and major disciplinary actions.
Interprets and applies departmental policies and procedures in routine as well as in unusual or difficult circumstances.
Responsible for accuracy and completeness of various official records and reports prepared by subordinates and/or other staff.
Engages in routine criminal law enforcement and crime prevention duties; Assists area law enforcement and other governmental agencies as needed.
Responds to scenes of emergencies accidents and crimes to assist and supervise.
Questions witnesses and suspects and take statements. Handles more difficult complaints and problems.
Participates in or provides guidance in various investigations including robbery burglary sex crimes and narcotics cases.
Writes various reports; maintains miscellaneous records and files; recommends material and equipment needs; performs essential duties/responsibilities from Job Descriptions of Subordinate Ranks; and performs other duties as needed or requested.
This job description covers a position in which the percentage of time on the essential functions will vary based on the workload and will ultimately be determined by the Chief of Police or Lieutenant or his designee.
High School graduate or the equivalent.
Have a current Peace Officer License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
Basic Instructors Proficiency Course or attain within 1 year of appointment.
Field Training Officer (FTO) Course or attain within 6 months of appointment.
Five (5) years of Concurrent TSTC Police Patrol Experience.
Must have Proficient Knowledge of Local State and Federal Laws.
Skilled in the Use and Care of Firearms Vehicles and other Common Police Equipment.
Basic to Intermediate Computer Skills.
Working Knowledge of Modern Policing Issues Philosophies Practices and Trends applied within the College Environment preferred.
Perform Essential Duties/Responsibilities from Job Descriptions of Subordinate Ranks.
Knowledge of First Aid; and the Ability to Gain Compliance with the Law in a Professional Manner.
Skill in Completing Accident and Criminal Investigations.
Ability to Supervise and Training Employees to include Organizing Prioritizing and Scheduling Work Assignments
Strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills.
Ability to Work Effectively with a Wide Range of individuals in a Diverse Community.
Ability to Gather and Organize Evidence.
Ability to Provide Legal Depositions and Testimony.
Knowledge of Laws Regulations Methods and Techniques in Area(s) of Specialty.
Must successfully pass psychological evaluation physical examination and complete background investigation; to include but not limited to driving history criminal background and credit history.
Clery Act for Campus Security Authorities Training within 3 months of appointment
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Associates Degree; preferred Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
Minimum 10 years of police experience; preferred 5 or more years in a college or university setting. A Masters degree may be considered in lieu of years of experience.
Advance Peace Officer; preferred Master Peace Officer
Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree except in cases where a specific degree is required to meet accreditation standards licensure requirements or other legislative or regulatory obligations. This includes but is not limited to certain faculty positions and staff roles governed by state or federal educational mandates.

This is an on-campus position that requires employees to be physically present at a campus location at least three days per week
This role may require occasional travel to different office locations and events
Ability to perform essential physical tasks such as sitting standing walking lifting or other job-specific movements as needed.
Flexibility to work outside regular business hours as needed
This position is full time requiring a standard 40-hour work week
This role is classified as salaried non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
This position is not ORP eligible
