Job Description

The Director of Alumni Relations will serve as the chief engagement and events officer in the College of Science. This position will be primarily responsible for providing leadership and guidance for the colleges engagement and stewardship efforts with alumni donors and friends to ultimately increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support for the college. Additionally the director will work collaboratively with colleagues in University Advancement and in the College of Science to further Virginia Techs overall engagement and institutional advancement goals and objectives.

The director will be responsible for planning promoting executing and evaluating alumni engagement programs projects and events for the collaboration with the colleges Senior Director of Communications the director will strategize and implement targeted alumni communication efforts for the College of Science. This position will work in tandem with the members of the colleges advancement team to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals related to communications fundraising and alumni engagement. The director must be comfortable making group presentations and have the ability to work both closely and effectively with university alumni administrators and faculty.

Regional and national travel is required for the purposes of conducting field research cultivation solicitation and stewardship which may include overnights and weekends. The director must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard commercial and/or personal modes of transportation. Additionally the ability to work nights and weekends and participation in college or university programs when possible is necessary.

Required Qualifications

- Masters degree in marketing hospitality communication or other related field; or Bachelors degree with experience equating to an advanced degree.

- Experience in event planning alumni activities and/or educational programming.

- Excellent communication organizational and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide range of constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications

- Significant experience in event planning particularly in higher education.

- Experience in alumni relations; significant experience developing effective strategies for planning events to enhance constituent participation and philanthropic support.

- Demonstrated ability to train and motivate volunteers.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

- Knowledge of Virginia Tech and its programs.
