Background

We are seeking a dynamic clinical research fellow at FY2 level or above to join an established multi-disciplinary team of clinicians and scientists for a one-year post to assist with the running of the REPROGRAM trial.

The REPROGRAM trial is a biological endpoints trial nested within an ambitious wider project funded by the Wellcome Leap. It seeks to determine biological changes within the Hallmarks of Ageing following three weeks of a geroprotector. It will analyse this data concurrently with data from the REBOUND study a study of biological changes in older adults following a surgical stressor to determine whether geroprotectors could be utilised successfully in a pre-habilitation window prior to surgery. It is hoped this will lead to further funding in the form of a clinical trial.

This trial is being run through the Inflammation Research Facility at the QEHB benefiting from the close links between the University and the Trust. This is an established unit with a proven track record in successful research studies supporting hundreds of individuals to gain experience in research.

Role Summary

The purpose of this role is to:

  • obtain training and experience in clinical trials research comprehensive geriatric assessment and research techniques to obtain biological tissue.
  • support a multidisciplinary team to undertake a biological endpoints trial of geroprotectors in healthy older volunteers
  • undertake unsupervised as well as supervised background reading of literature relating to this project
  • contribute to research meetings
  • there will be some administrative tasks associated with this role.

Main Duties

  • To coordinate recruitment of healthy volunteers to the REPROGRAM trial including volunteer identification consent and research comprehensive geriatric assessment
  • To contribute to the enhancement of scientific understanding of geroprotectors in older adults.
  • Toundertake prescribedresearchtasksandcollection ofresearchdata.
  • Tosuggestandcontribute tothedevelopmentofresearchtechniquesand methods in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Todisseminateresearchfindingsusingappropriate andeffective mediasuch as publicationresearchseminarsetc.
  • Toprovide guidancetootherstaffandstudents.
  • Tocontributetotheproduction ofresearchreportsand high impact publications.
  • Toplan and develop research contributionsto subjectareausing methodologiescriticalevaluationsinterpretationsanalyses andother appropriatetechniques.
  • To participate in departmental and ageing specific public engagement activities and initiatives.

Required Knowledge Skills Qualifications Experience

Essential:

  • Full General Medical Council Registration with aLicenceto Practice.
  • Medicaldegree.
  • Experience of Geriatric Medicine.
  • Enthusiasm for the care of older adults and their inclusion within research.
  • Core clinical skills including phlebotomy.
  • Analytical and problem solving capabilities.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable:

  • Demonstrable researchexperience.
  • Understandingandexperience ofresearchmethods and processesrelated to the studyofchronic inflammatorydiseases.

Planning and Organising

  • Plan for the use of research resources as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the planning of research projects.
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort.
  • Prioritise responsibilities and various undertaken work-streams.

Decision Making

  • Critical decision making on appropriate amendments to experimental design and progress to ensure optimal output.
  • Plan for the use of research resources as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the planning of research projects.
