Job Description

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) works in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills qualifications and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.

Reporting to the Senior Legal Advisor Criminal Offence Unit the Legal Advisoris to provide legal advice and manage a caseload in relation to the investigation and prosecution of criminal offences under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law. Additionally the role will support the legal services division by working collaboratively across all areas of health practitioner regulation and providing legal advice and support to Ahpra and the National Boards.

This is an ongoing full-time opportunity available to all state offices

In this role you will:

  • Deliver expert legal advice both written and oral on criminal investigations ensuring compliance with the National Law applicable legislation regulations and codes of practice.
  • Independently manage a high-volume caseloadincluding complex and low-risk prosecutionsensuring effective legal service through oversight of all prosecution elements and coordination with legal providers and stakeholders.
  • Provide legal advice and support to Inspectors working collaboratively with and supporting other Ahpra colleagues.
  • Where appropriate conduct investigations of low and moderate risk complaints about alleged offences and exercise statutory powers as an Inspector.
  • Supervise and mentor junior legal staff.
  • Provide professional legal advice and recommendations in relation to the development and review of policies and procedures ensuring national consistency and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to a database of relevant prosecution outcomes and advice.
  • Other duties as directed by the Senior Legal Advisor Criminal Offences Unit.
