This position is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment across North Hennepin Community College buildings and surrounding property. It plays a critical role in promoting campus safety by monitoring for potential security and safety concerns serving as the primary point of contact for emergency personnel and supervising a team of Student Safety Monitors during assigned shifts. This position directly supports the departments mission by fostering a secure learning and working environment for students faculty staff and visitors.
Salary Range:
$23.26 - $32.96 hourly
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of campus security protocols emergency response procedures and safety regulations relevant to a college environment.
Familiarity with key and card access control systems security equipment and incident reporting processes.
Ability to supervise train and evaluate student employees effectively.
Strong decision-making skills with the ability to assess emergency situations quickly and take appropriate action in the absence of direct supervision.
Excellent communication skills to interact professionally with students staff emergency personnel and external agencies.
Proficiency in maintaining accurate records preparing reports and managing scheduling and timesheets.
Capable of conducting training sessions and safety drills for diverse campus populations.
Physical ability to respond to emergencies conduct patrols and assist with evacuations including aiding individuals with disabilities.
Basic computer skills for database management incident documentation and use of communication devices.
Ability to remain calm and effective in confrontational or high-stress situations.
Preferred Qualification
Minimum Education and Experience: 2 year college degree; prior experience in security emergency management or related fields preferred.
The incumbent should possess comprehensive knowledge of:
City of Brooklyn Park ordinances State of Minnesota and Federal criminal and civil laws as they apply to campus security.
North Hennepin Community College policies and procedures.
Standard police practices including investigation techniques and procedures.
Emergency medical techniques and first responder protocols.
Rules of evidence and citizens arrest powers.
Proper use and application of handcuffs and pepper spray.
Loss prevention strategies and traffic control methods.
Physical security measures and locksmithing skills.
Operation and maintenance of fire alarm systems.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
Right-to-Know training and the Campus Security Act of 1992 including related compliance requirements.
Data Privacy Act regulations and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) handling procedures.
Working knowledge of computer operating systems and related software applications.
Mechanical aptitude sufficient to recognize and temporarily control mechanical emergencies until physical plant personnel arrive.
Additional qualifications include:
Successful completion of FBI/BCA background checks with no felony or misdemeanor convictions.
Physical ability to run and walk long distances see and hear clearly reach upward climb ladders and stairs move heavy objects and restrain uncooperative individuals.
Proven ability to train motivate and manage student employees effectively.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills essential for interviewing witnesses victims and suspects; defusing conflicts and violent situations; and providing leadership.
Excellent written communication skills for preparing reports and recommending changes to standard operating procedures and policies.
Above-average ability to engage positively with the public and students in both routine and challenging situations.
Proficiency in operating two-way radios with phone answering capabilities adhering to FCC guidelines.
Demonstrated ability to make timely independent decisions in the absence of supervision.
Education: Bachelors degree emergency management training prior experience in security emergency management or related field.
