Your role
Working under supervision and in direct contact with scientists you will be involved in the daily care welfare animal checks and general husbandry of experimental model organism colonies. You will also perform basic experimental procedures and provide technical and experimental support keeping necessary records and entering data onto computer tracking systems.
Tasks duties and responsibilities:
Animal husbandry care and use
- Provide day to day routine husbandry maintenance and care of model organism collections (e.g. Planaria species).
- Organize and catalogue planarian species collection.
- Maintain and establish culture and breeding schemes in liaison with EMBL researchers.
- Perform flow systems cleaning and basic maintenance (filters valves etc.).
- Perform scheduled water quality checks. Optimize culture conditions for different planarian species: salt compositions temperature feeding culture systems etc.
- Daily maintenance of static cultures of planarians.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures for Model Organism husbandry and procedural work.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records relating to environmental conditions animal details and experimental procedures.
- Support the health and welfare of model organism collections by performing routine welfare checks and other related tasks.
- Assist with receiving new models/individuals and reporting any observed incidences.
- This position requires strict adherence to established protocols and biosafety practices and the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a research setting.
- Field work with the lab is not required but highly desirable.
Policies and compliance
- Understand and follow EMBL institutional policies.
- Participate in lab meetings rounds and training events as required.
- care housing and husbandry tasks according to EMBL SOP and policies.
- Follow H&S and other relevant EMBL policies.
Research support
- Train researchers in the conduct of animal related procedures as appropriate.
- Provide technical assistance with experimental protocols to include handling observations and experiment follow-up.
- Work with LAR team to address investigator requests.
You have
- Experience of at least 3 years working with non-conventional animal models.
- Experience with aquatic static culture and flow systems.
- Function A C and D as per European Directive 2010/63/EC.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as a team member in a complex environment.
- Positive attitude towards learning and developing new skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and very good attention to detail.
- Computer skills.
- Able to communicate in English in a professional environment.
You may also have
- Experience working in a molecular biology lab.
- Experience with non-conventional research models
Contract length: Onrolling (EMBL Ancillary contract)
Salary: Grade 3
