Position Summary
This position is responsible for assisting and providing support to the Recreation Coordinator and working with the Head Guard by administering and implementing aquatic operations related to staffing scheduling lifeguard techniques facility usage and rules chemical testing aquatics programming and interfaces directly with patrons to answer questions about all aquatic operations and address patron concerns. This position works a variable schedule including early mornings evenings weekends and holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following are examples of primary duties assigned to this position. Other related duties may be assigned.
Management/Programming:
  • Maintains a safe environment providing quality aquatics programming and managing aquatics employees.
  • Monitors and tracks the completion and maintenance of aquatics employees certifications; including lifeguards and WSIs.
  • Enforces MRD policies and procedures relating to aquatic programs and facilities documenting disciplinary notices and providing signed documents to the Coordinator and Human Resources.
  • Ensures the daily cleaning / maintenance checklists and care of program equipment are performed.
  • Understands and implements the Aquatic Facilities Manuals and Emergency Action Plan.
  • Plans coordinates and facilitates special events and programs within the aquatic facilities; including advertising and recruiting.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends in the aquatic industry and recommends local improvements.
  • Manages swim lessons which includes rosters schedules program evaluation forms and completion of Red Cross records.
Training/Safety:
  • Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguard rescue techniques and teaching swimming techniques.
  • Attends and provides aquatic employee training; facilitates in service training to Aquatics staff.
  • Conducts Water Safety Instructor classes.
  • Provides safety training for MRD Full-time and Core employees on a regular basis.
  • Performs regular safety checks and keeps first aid supplies stocked.
  • Performs chemical tests on the water in the various pools at the Aquatic Facilities and helps problem-solve corrections.
Administration:
  • Maintains accidents / incidents reports for the aquatic facilities and submits reports to Human Resources.
  • Manages swim lesson records - Assemble instructor packets with parent letter rosters certificates lesson plans lesson plan templates and program evaluation forms. Schedules instructors and at times be on deck for general parent questions
  • Accurately completes daily operation forms including operation reports maintenance request forms cleaning checklists and chemical testing.
  • Manages employee schedules attendance approves time and communicates with Coordinator on these items.
  • Maintains accurate employee phone lists.
  • Completes spot evaluations/audits of employees and uniform enforcement.
  • Provides recommendations to the Recreation Coordinator regarding policies and procedures.
  • Communicates with the Recreation Coordinator any problems developments conditions or accidents/incidents that take place that may require action.
Position Competencies
  • Ability to assist in the planning implementation and evaluation of various aquatic programs (e.g. swim lessons water fitness lifeguard training recreational swimming).
  • Knowledge of water safety protocols emergency procedures and risk management to ensure a safe environment.
  • Ability to supervise train and mentor staff to maintain high standards of performance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with staff participants and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to assist in managing budgets and resources for programs and ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to local state and federal regulations related to aquatics including health codes safety standards and accessibility guidelines.
  • Ensuring the cleanliness upkeep and safety of aquatic facilities (e.g. pool maintenance water quality).
Work Environment
  • Office environment with indoor and outdoor Aquatic Facilities which includes travel from facility to facility.
  • Aquatic facilities include high temperatures humidity and/or seasonal weather variation.
  • Hours will include seasonal variations with evening weekend and holiday hours.
  • Extensive public contact.
  • Required to utilize their personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement.
  • Required to have a cell phone with part of the monthly service cost provided.
Physical demands
  • Busy Rec Center environment with extensive public contact.
  • Primary functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for walking standing or sitting for prolonged periods. This position will also require moderate to heavy lifting on occasion and work in indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities.
  • While the leaders primary responsibility may not be swimming the role requires the ability to maintain lifeguard certification especially for emergency situations or to conduct water-based lessons and activities and will be required to demonstrate techniques to staff or participants.
  • The Leader needs to be prepared for emergencies such as water rescues which requires a certain level of physical fitness. This might include reacting quickly to a potential drowning or injury situation which could involve pulling someone from the pool or administering CPR.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand and/or walk sit talk hear read and write. May periodically need to reach stoop crouch or kneel. Employee may be asked to lift/carry and/or move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Constant sitting standing and walking throughout pool area to observe patrons adherence to facility rules and inspect for safety hazards.
  • Constant near and far visual acuity to observe pools for possible troubled swimmers and safety hazards; constant audial acuity to be aware of troubled individual that may be out of line of sight.
Travel required
  • While performing the duties of the job the employee is frequently required to attend a variety of meetings activities and events held at all MRD locations. Efficient and effective transportation to and from all MRD facilities is required.
Required education and experience
  • A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation physical education management or related field.
-Or-
  • A minimum of four (4) years supervising recreation or aquatics programming.
-Or-
  • A combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge skills and abilities to perform the duties of this position.
License and Certification
Preferred or- ability to obtain in 6 weeks of hire date:
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (LGIT) certification or equivalent.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification or equivalent.
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification or equivalent.
  • Current Certified Pool Operator (CFO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license.
