Job Description
Position Summary
The College of Health and Human Services at San Diego State University is seeking a student-focused and highly motivated Academic Advisor to provide accessible consistent and high-quality academic advising to undergraduate students across the college. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs this position supports both lower- and upper-division students including first-time freshmen and upper-division transfer students in their academic journey from recruitment through graduation.
Key Responsibilities
- Academic Advising & Student Support: Provide one-on-one and group academic advising to prospective and continuing students. Support students in understanding degree requirements developing educational plans selecting courses and navigating university policies and procedures.
- Recruitment Retention & Graduation Success: Facilitate student recruitment admission transition retention and timely graduation by delivering proactive and developmentally appropriate advising and support throughout each stage of the student lifecycle.
- Student Issue Resolution & Referrals: Address complex academic and personal challenges faced by students. Serve as a problem-solver and advocate by mediating issues providing accurate information and connecting students with appropriate campus resources.
- Workshops & Programming: Design and implement advising-related workshops and programming to support student engagement academic planning and degree progress. Collaborate with campus partners to enhance student success initiatives.
- Policy Interpretation & Guidance: Interpret and explain academic policies university procedures and graduation requirements. Assist students in aligning their academic choices with personal educational and career goals.
- Interdepartmental Collaboration: Work closely with faculty staff and student support units across the college and university to ensure a cohesive and supportive academic advising experience.

Position Information
- This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible permanent/probationary position.
- This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.
- This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.
Department Summary
The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) faculty through advising teaching and supervising offers students a balanced education of academic study field placement clinical experiences and research opportunities. CHHS consists of the following schools: the School of Speech Language and Hearing Sciences the School of Nursing the School of Social Work the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences the School of Physical Therapy and the School of Public Health.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A masters degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Key Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the practices procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
- General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
- Demonstrated experience presenting information to a group.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing data to determine trends related to retention and graduation rates.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Masters degree (preferred).
- Experience providing outreach services to students specifically first-generation college students (preferred).
- Familiar with CSU and SDSU general education and graduation requirements (preferred).
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5083 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education experience and qualifications the candidate brings to the position internal equity and the hiring departments fiscal resources.
