Job Description

The Opportunity

  • Develop your skills in a range of activities associated with molecular extractions
  • $100354-$107054 (increasing to $103866 - $110810) 17% super leave loading
  • Full-time (35 hours week) 2-year Fixed Term Contract

The Technical Officer Biospecimen Services plays a vital role in supporting both researchers and research infrastructure as a member of the multidisciplinary Biospecimen Services Team within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC). MWAC operates under the portfolio of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Infrastructure) within the UNSW Division of Research and Enterprise.

This position collaborates with key stakeholders across various faculties and schools to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of biorepository services. Responsibilities include the comprehensive support of biospecimen-related activities such as collection preparation storage and distribution. The role sits within the biospecimen processing laboratories and includes working with the patient samples and associated databases. Additionally the Technical Officer will work closely with colleagues from UNSW Biospecimen Services and MWAC to enhance engagement with the broader research community particularly within the Randwick Health & Innovation Precinct.

This role reports to the Manager UNSW Biospecimen Services and does not have any direct reports.

About the successful applicant

You have a university degree in science engineering or a related field and or possess an equivalent level of knowledge and practical experience in biospecimen processing with expertise in molecular extractions from diverse materials using both manual and automated methods.

A sound understanding of biobanking principles is also essential including adherence to ethical standards patient confidentiality and maintaining the integrity of specimen provenance. You are comfortable using various computer applications particularly inventory systems and are capable of resolving user interface issues as they arise. You will work with a range of clients to understand their projects and how to best service their requirements.

Your ability to manage shifting priorities handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines using sound judgement and initiative is crucial. You also have excellent interpersonal and communication skills enabling you to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders all while demonstrating keen attention to detail. You work well in a collaborative team environment but can also operate independently managing competing demands effectively. Additionally you are aligned with UNSWs mission values and policies and are committed to health and safety responsibilities including participating in relevant training.
