TITLE

Director Collection Strategies and Discovery

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Integrated Library Resources and Support this position works closely with administrative and library colleagues to carry out the mission of the TWU Libraries by providing leadership direction and oversight of the Collection Strategies and Discovery unit which provides access to a broad range of materials that support the Universitys academic programs and research initiatives. The Director of Collection Strategies and Discovery leads areas related to collection development collection management cataloging access and the development of physical and digital resources. This position works collaboratively with all three campus libraries and serves as a member of the TWU Libraries administrative leadership team setting the direction and goals for the TWU Libraries. This position works to ensure that library resources and services are appropriate and accessible to TWU students faculty and staff and that the Libraries are responsible stewards of the Universitys financial resources. Timely communication and adherence to deadlines is a critical part of this position. This is a supervisory position that is responsible for hiring training evaluating and mentoring staff. The Director sets goals and priorities initiates projects implements standards and develops workflow procedures. This is a security sensitive position that works under minimal supervision with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Performance is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures and is based on the accomplishment of defined objectives and the effectiveness of the assigned library functions.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to:Assistant Dean Integrated Library Resources and Support

Supervises:Manager of Catalog & Metadata Services Manager Library Collections Administration Collections Projects & Resources Librarian

ESSENTIAL DUTIES -May include but not limited to the following:

  1. Provides leadership coordination assessment and overall management of the Collection Strategies and Discovery unit.
  2. Plans develops and implements policies and procedures for the efficient operation of the unit and its services ensuring accurate library policies related to collection development retention shifting reconsideration of materials and other related policies.
  3. Develops strategic plans for the Collection Strategies and Discovery unit.
  4. Communicates and coordinates Collection Strategies and Discovery unit issues through collaboration with all other areas of the TWU Libraries.
  5. Serves on the Library Administrative Team providing strategic direction for the Libraries in general and for the Collection Strategies and Discovery unit individually.
  6. Prepares departmental operating and spending plans.
  7. Provides expertise to guide staff through change that impacts services.
  8. Contributes to a collaborative and collegial work environment.
  9. Initiates develops manages and prioritizes projects in assigned areas to meet expected outcomes.
  10. Participates in the development and implementation of TWU Libraries policies.
  11. Sets priorities and promotes initiatives that align with the Universitys strategic plan and contribute value to the TWU community.
  12. Ensures the selection de-accession preservation and location recommendations for print and digital materials are in alignment with the Collections Retention and Shifting Methodology Policy.
  13. Serves as the primary administrator of the integrated library system (ILS) for the TWU Libraries.
  14. Ensures the TWU Libraries ILS is properly configured updated operational and compliant.
  15. Keeps current with trends and issues in the library systems industry as well as within librarianship emerging technologies acquisitions collection development cataloging and metadata database management and publishing.
  16. Embraces new models of collection procurement electronic data exchange bibliographic standards and cataloging record discovery and electronic access and linking methods.
  17. Analyzes and reports all required federal and state statistics.
  18. Oversees the collection and dissemination of information regarding library collections and services in support of curriculum and research for federal state and local government university units and professional association accrediting bodies.
  19. Oversees the assessment of library resources for an annual review of relevancy and cost-effectiveness.
  20. Oversees regular surveys to measure and assess internal and external initiatives.
  21. Provides vision strategic direction and system administration for the Libraries collection systems.
  22. Hires trains and develops staff in the Collection Strategies and Discovery unit.
  23. Leads the Libraries in the current and future development of collections and related technologies.
  24. Enhances the delivery of library services through the adoption of new technologies funded projects and partnerships.
  25. Responsible for establishing job standards for subordinate staff and effectively evaluating staff under charge. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  1. Supports campus and library events.
  2. Contributes to the Libraries webpages.
  3. Demonstrates continuing growth and professional development through activities and service.
  4. Represents the Collection Strategies and Discovery unit to external bodies across campus.
  5. Serves on library university or professional organization committees.
  6. Prepares monthly semester and special reports and documentation as requested.
  7. Markets the services of the TWU Libraries.
  8. Performs other duties as requested.

EDUCATION

Masters degree in Library Science or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution.

EXPERIENCE

Six years of professional library experience with a record of increasing knowledge and responsibility in the administration of libraries and a minimum of two years of experience in an administrative/managerial role. Experience working with researchers and administrators in an academic environment is preferred.

Additional education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES -The following are essential:

  1. In-depth knowledge of library resources and services business practices and financial accounting data collection and assessment methods and integrated library systems technology.
  2. Knowledge of licensing scholarly communication models and current marketplace for automated library services.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of current collection development strategies.
  4. Ability to plan develop implement and evaluate projects and programs as well as establish timeframes for completion.
  • Knowledge of general library operations informational and curricular needs and subject specific resources for research and instruction.

  11. Ability to apply budgeting and fiscal planning skills within financial limitations.

  • Ability to use office equipment and personal computer including university software and email.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands of this job include repetitive hand motion hearing listening talking While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to utilize repetitive hand motion hearing listening talking walking bending stooping crouching reaching overhead pulling pushing climbing ladders kneeling squatting are all requirements of this position. The employee must have the ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Possible eye strain from detailed computer work.The employee may be required to travel work evenings and/or weekends.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
