Job Description

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is seeking a 60 - 100% Electroretinogram (ERG) & Clinical Orthoptist (PK80) or Electroretinogram (ERG) & Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician (GC84). This position will be under the supervision of the Clinic Manager.

The Department ofOphthalmology and Visual Sciences intends to hire either an Electroretinogram (ERG) & Clinical Orthoptist (PK80) or an Electroretinogram (ERG) & Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician (GC84) based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Primary responsibilities of the ERG & Clinical Orthoptist (PK80) include serving as an ERG clinical technical expert and secondary responsibilities to perform an extensive number of routine and advanced technical procedures as delegated by the physician to collect medical data and assist in ophthalmic patient care. As an ERG Technician this position provides direct patient care by performing work-ups and appropriate testing for patients with known or suspected blinding eye disorders or syndromes assisting in the coordination and technical education of fellows residents orthoptic students and doctors who rotate through the ERG service and serving as a liaison between the ophthalmology clinics and other clinics throughout the hospital. As an orthoptist this position serves as an orthoptic clinical and technical expert. The Orthoptist provides direct patient care by performing sensorimotor testing evaluating and treating eye movement disorders and binocular vision participating in the evaluation and diagnosis of patients with amblyopia diplopia genetic disorders of the eye pediatric and adult strabismus and other eye movement conditions. The Orthoptist also assists in coordinating and educating fellows residents orthoptic students and doctors who rotate through the services participates in clinical research into eye movement disorders diplopia strabismus nystagmus and inherited eye disorders and serves as a liaison between the ophthalmology clinics and other areas in the Department of Ophthalmology and other clinics throughout the hospital.

Primary responsibilities of the ERG & Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician position include the ERG Technician duties noted above as well as responsibility for day-to-day operations and interaction with pediatric patients to obtain medical histories and precise measurement and documentation of the following:

  • Visual acuity at all ages including nonverbal patients (induced tropia fixation preference Tellers acuity LEA symbols HOTV with crowding bars) both distance and near
  • Age and ability appropriate visual acuity checking in patients with nystagmus and amblyopia
  • Manual lensometry including prisms
  • Confrontational visual fields
  • Stereopsis
  • Motility
  • Alternate cover testing for eye alignment
  • Pupillary function
  • Color plates age and ability appropriate
  • iCare tonometry
  • Autorefraction as appropriate for age and refraction
  • Administer eye drops as necessary and instructed
  • Help maintain clinic flow and coordinate clinics

This dual role serves children and their caregivers and patients with developmental delay and disabilities including non-verbal or pre-verbal patients. In addition to those listed above duties may also include taking history and documenting reports and concerns from patients and family which are pertinent to the appointment and assisting physicians with clinical procedures like retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) or bundled exams. To support clinic flow the ERG & Clinical Orthoptist or ERG & Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician is expected to update their location on the status board remain aware of the current location of fellow colleagues and patients in order to minimize delays and wait times and demonstrate flexibility and awareness to proactively serve in the areas of most need within the clinic. In down times and before clinic begins the ERG & Clinical Orthoptist or ERG & Pediatric Ophthalmic Technician stocks rooms ensures all equipment is functional etc. This position performs these duties both in the Pediatric Specialty Clinic (PSC) at the University of Iowa Health Care as well as in main Ophthalmology clinic located in the Pomerantz Family Pavilion at University of Iowa Health Care.
