Reports to:Chief Academic Officer - Secondary
General Summary:
The High School Principal provides instructional leadership to staff including: curriculum planning review and implementation and professional development to improve student progress. Responsible for the safety and welfare of students and staff and building administration. The High School Principal reports to theChief Academic Officer - Secondary.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interacts with students to encourage each individual to perform at his/her highest level.
- Provides a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.
- Manages all building staff personnel.
- Assigns students to classes and teachers to classrooms.
- Provides support to teachers and resolves staff problems.
- Provides general supervision to students. Supervises extra curricular activities.
- Evaluates performance of program and staff. Provides in-service training to staff as needed.
- Prepares and maintains the school budget.
- Develops an annual building calendar.
- Maintains relations with parents parent groups school volunteers and outside agencies.
- Implements policy and procedure changes from the Board or the State and Federal level.
- Reports appropriately to staff and to the community on Public Act 25.
- Builds a positive learning environment.
- Attends Board of Education and other meetings as assigned.
- Serves on district and building level committees.
- Other duties as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current standards for Michigan secondary administrator certification.
- Current Michigan secondary teaching certification.
- Masters degree minimum.
- Minimum of three (3) years successful secondary teaching/administrative experience.
- Strong background in curriculum.
- Demonstrated educational leadership.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work effectively with administrative colleagues staff students and parents (listening speaking and writing skills).
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with the development and implementation of interdisciplinary curriculum and team teaching.
- Ability to coordinate block and/or other scheduling.
- Working knowledge of Effective School Research/School Improvement.
- Knowledge and application of multiple intelligences and human development theories.
- Experience with personnel supervision that focuses on growth of personnel and students.
- Additional graduate classes/degree beyond a Masters degree.
- Working knowledge of the use of technology in the classroom and student and professional management systems.
- Working knowledge of assessment.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis to the office.
- Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- The person in this position needs to be able to move about the building and district property setting including stooping crouching bending sitting standing and walking.
- Regular use of computer and other office equipment (printer/copy machine etc.)
- The ability to listen and effectively communicate both written and orally information and ideas to a diverse population.
- Ability to effectively discern information and formulate appropriate action(s).
- Ability to critically think and provide appropriate solutions.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in high stress or conflict situations.
- Occasionally moves boxes and office supplies weighing up to 20 lbs across the office for various needs.
- Ability to drive to various locations throughout the district.
Environmental Conditions:
This is a largely active assignment including walking and maneuvering around the school building and school property. Noise levels vary from quiet to loud and environmental conditions include indoor and outdoor duties in temperature controlled and non-temperature controlled environments. Duties performed also include work on a computer or phone in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers filing cabinets and fax machines.
Work Schedules:
Must be available for overtime and/or emergency overtime before and/or after regular scheduled workday when necessary.
