Job Description

Title: Director Disability Resource Center

General Summary

Develop and administer policies and procedures for providing services and accommodations to persons with disabilities consistent with legal requirements and the Universitys mission and goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop implement and establish with the Assistant Vice President of Academic Success the goals for disability projects and services that comply with the law and University policies.
  • Supervise hire train and evaluate Disability Resource Center professional staff graduate assistants and student workers.
  • Make appropriate data-based policy and institutional change recommendations to the Assistant Vice President of Academic Services.
  • Develop implement and establish goals for adaptive technology support services through the Center for Adaptive Technology Education Lab (CATE Lab) for EMU students with disabilities.
  • Evaluate medical and psychological documents to determine and recommend appropriate accommodations and support for students with disabilities.
  • Monitor and interpret state and federal laws relating to persons with disabilities determine their impact on the Universitys policies and facilities and make recommendations for compliance.
  • Advise students parents/family members faculty and staff on disability-related accommodations and concerns.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on disability-related issues and services to publicize disability programs and provide training to university providers of services to students with disabilities.
  • Prepare grant requests to obtain funds for disability programs.
  • Participate in and lead as appropriate department division and university committees on disability matters.
  • Participate in professional organizations related to disability services within higher education to keep abreast of practices and developments in the field.
  • Recommend and monitor the department budget and approve operating expenses. Administer the office policies and procedures records and databases.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge and skills in program planning organization communication counseling and administration typically acquired through completion of a Masters Degree in rehabilitation counseling psychology college student counseling or higher education administration or a related field is required.

A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience working with programs and accommodations for students with disabilities are required preferably in a college or university setting.

Knowledge of ADA Sec 504 and all disability laws is required.

Experience working with students with a wide range of disabilities including physical learning mental health other disabilities and populations (i.e veterans transfer students and traditional college students) is required.

Working knowledge of academic administration including understanding of department and college levels and university community dynamics is necessary.
