Normal Work Schedule:Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm

Job Summary:The Programmer Analyst I designs develops supports and codes low-complexity software systems to support the administrative function of the University under close supervision. This may include departmental and moderately critical applications. Assists in the development of processes and web applications. Creates workflows. Installs customizes supports and creates integrations for vendor-supplied software systems. Works on a team and collaborates with specific departments colleges and customers around campus. Supports their needs troubleshooting and resolving issues and responding to their questions and concerns in a timely manner.
Additional Department Summary:The Alabama Water Institute at the University of Alabama has an opening for a Programmer Analyst I with a strong hands-on technical orientation to contribute to a NOAA-funded project. This position will be oriented around supporting scientific methodologies into research hydrology simulations assisting with geospatial data pipeline builds and shareable community codes. The role requires strong collaboration across CIROH research teams as well as coordination of specific research workflows to support individual contributions. The specialist will also be involved in stakeholder outreach documentation and addressing technical challenges related to interconnected systems for hydrological modeling.
Continuation in this position is contingent upon the availability of external funding derived from research programs or specific projects.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Computer Science Information Systems Software Engineering Mathematics Geography or a closely related field.
Skills and Knowledge:Familiarity with at least one programming language (e.g. Java Python SQL or similar). Basic understanding of software development concepts and database systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Willingness to learn and grow in a collaborative environment. Familiarity with version control tools (e.g. Git) and basic software debugging tools.
Preferred Qualifications:Internship part-time job or coursework involving software development or IT systems. Familiarity with the NextGen framework or similar hydrological systems. Awareness of machine learning models implementation. Awareness of operational forecasting systems. Experience with large-scale data processing and optimization techniques.
